Hello all.
I'm starting trucking school next week. I live in central Maine. What do I do about getting home on my days off if I get hired by a company like Swift or Werner? Their terminals are REALLY far away from home, Pennsylvania I think. Are there drop yards in Maine that I could use? Or maybe these companies would let me take the truck home?

You best not plan on being home very often unless they've got on heck of alot of loads going to Maine.

what puzzles me is that our stores in Maine are filled with stuff. Clearly that stuff is coming off of a truck coming from somewhere, but where, and do they hire newbees?

Think about how many trucking companys there are and the realistic size of the market where you live. Drop by a couple of the big warehouse operations around Portland and notice where all the trucks are from.
Seriously, if you live in a "small market area" anywheres and want to come home with any regularity you better find someone who's based in that area. Or at least has a large terminal they operate several trucks from. -
Plan the worse right now and then when you get your feet wet and are settled in go to the company and see what they say.
Is it true that up in Maine a guy flew over a farm in a hot air balloon and asked the farmer where is was. And the farmer replied " You in a Balloon ,you danm fool"?. -
Just make sure they have freight to ME. Quite a few big companies pull loads out of Skowhegan at Sappi. Off the top of my head Schneider and Shaffer do.
