Don't waste your time, that is what the big guys do. If you need to plate a trailer do it in your home state. Or if you insist on getting a Maine tag, go rent a trailer with one. ;-)

I have a non expiring trailer plate in Ky, my home state that I paid a one time small fee for. I still receive a tax bill each year with the registration, but since my vehicle is used Interstate I don’t have to pay it. However I have to send the local tax accessor proof it is used Interstate each year to be exempt from the tax. One log showing crossing state lines and proof of inspection in the current year is what I have to send in. With only one trailer it isn’t a big deal to fax them the info they need.
A friend of mine owns and operates a fleet, 50 trucks or so. He asked me why I used Ky instead of Maine trailer plates and I didn’t have a good answer. He said when you get the tax bill, you will wish you had Maine plates. He uses Maine trailer plates. I think he said they have to be renewed every 5 years. I can understand why he prefers to just renew every 5 years instead of having to fax info on all his trailers every year like I do. I guess what ever works for your situation would be best.

If you really want to try Haskell Registration. But not much benefit to it. They don’t have permanent plates.

    Justrucking2 Thanks this.

How long do you plan on keeping the trailers? I pay annually here in Iowa, $30. I could go with a perm plate for $300, but I will not keep the trailer that long.

Not a big guy, but have tagged several trailers in Maine. If your state charges sales tax or property tax on trailers, it can be pretty beneficial to not pay it.
