Found a used K40 magnet antenna for $25. Thinking of buying it. How does it compare to the Wilson 1000?
I have more radios than antennas....need to fix that. MSRP for K40 mag is around $95 anyway.

I remember back in the day a K40 was a popular antenna. I own one but it was a fiberglass whip with the sliding tube at the top of the tip to set the swr. For the price, I would pick it up the mag mount.

If it hasn't been messed with or abused, it is still a good antenna. Especially for the price.

Cbradiomagazine has a goid review on the K40. I used a Wilson 1000 for 9 years on my personal vehicle and it performed excellent. Just recently I purchased a Stryker SR-5K and from day one my swr would spike and I think its from the screw on end they used, I plan on changing ends and putting a permanent one on. You cant beat that price so if antenna is in good shape I would give it a try instead of spending 100 bucks for a new one.

Would've been nice. Too bad the whip was bent, and worse, the coax screwed up. The first clue was the random electrical tape on the cable. My SWR meter went off the charts. So did my General Lee-- even on low power, a really bad antenna match (worse than 3:1) makes it hiss with RF feedback.

Bt...Somethin like that is not even worth taken a chance on keyin up..
Thats an advantage an antenna analyzer has over testing with your radio..

I don't run an amplifier, keying up for a short time even without an antenna won't do any harm to my equipment. It hasn't yet and I doubt it will ever.

I'm not sure if any of my radios have SWR protection. I know my General Lee is the only one that makes an audible hiss when the SWR is unacceptable. You're right, no sense keying up with out a load. Although that YouTube video with a guy keying up a cobra 25 for over an hour with no antenna is neat. It got hot, but didn't fail. Unless you're running a lot of power, no way a couple watts for a few seconds should be able to destroy a transistor. Lots of CBers tend to equate an accidental key up to be as disastrous lighting a keg of gun powder.
