Shortly after picking up a load, I got an unsolicited text message asking me to reply which I promptly ignored since I was driving. I then received more text messages over the next hour and even a robo-call -- all of which I ignored. I'm not in the habit of installing dubious technology on a whim and I'm even less inclined to install pushy dubious technology...

When I stopped ~8 hours later, I did a little research. The messages came from Macropoint, which does seem to be a "legitimate" product that uses your cell phone's location based on cell tower data (not GPS so it does not require a smart phone). It does use SMS & data -- something to keep in mind if either are not unlimited. Turns out it does not require the installation of an app, but it does require your consent to let your cell provider give them your location information.

    Mainly I have 2 issues:

    1) I'm not in the business of providing additional services for free. If this service is important to the customer, then its inclusion needs to be mentioned in the negotiations & reflected in the rate -- not sprung on me after the fact.

    2) I am not comfortable with their privacy policy, specifically that I have no expectation of privacy while using this service and that they are free to share my location information, not just with the shipper/broker, but any of their customers. If I was in the business of hijacking trucks, I'd certainly want to be a customer of Macropoint!

What do you all think -- should I make a tinfoil hat now? How many have accepted tracking? Did you terminate tracking after the load? Did you negotiate for additional pay to allow a cell tracking service?

When I do ATS loads they like to track their loads that way.

I ignore the call,.. just make sure you call the broker to inform them with status updates.

I get them but ignore it all. Nobody every complains. Those tracking companies also make money off that. They track where you are and when your stopped and tailor the ads on web pages for hotels, restaurants and whatever. Your location is spread to search engines also like Google. Ever wonder how the heck did they know I'm here?

Use it if the broker wants you to. It's easy to turn off and not a big deal. Every driver and their brother complains about it or ignores it. You're a service provider. I have a few brokers who require it but actually waive it when they load my truck because they get status updates every step of the way via email. You've seen the email chain before. That is service no-one out here provides. We do. At the oilfields they will take a bow - lol - joke. It's how you stand out above the crowd. You don't have to do much service wise to.impress. There's a lot of slackers out here who think everyone can read their minds or doesn't matter if anyone knows where they're at they know what they're doing and get it done. On some of the high dollar expedite I do it's a service failure not to provide prompt updates (regardless if you do everything on time). Don't use macro point or provide the updates they want and they won't ever use you either. On some freight. Not every macro point load.

Ditto: Just keep the broker (and sometimes the shipper/consignee) updated more often than you usually would! and aimhigh

I read recently that some of the forest of cell towers around do not actually send or receive voice, text or other data. These towers are doing, among other things, the thing double yellow encountered. These towers are everywhere. The article I read cited 17 towers like these on like a 100 mile stretch in central Florida. Unsolicited text messaging is the same as telemarketing as far as I am concerned. I wonder if the FCC is going to agree.

I agree with rollin, I do accept it all the time. Does not bother me at all, also I know if someone wants to know where are you they will find you so there is not much privacy anymore. dont overthink it!

Don't worry, even when you do use it, the broker still has no clue where you are when you make your check calls.
