I regularly drove a Mack Granite pulling a 13.5k gallon baffled tanker hauling fuel.

I was looking for you guys opinions on which Mack model you think would be best for heavy haul, end dump etc…Anthem, Pinnacle or Granite. Experiences with each if applicable and just how much horsepower is enough…if for example regularly weighing out at 130k or so?

Well, I'm old, and for me, I'd have a Superliner with a 800hp tugboat motor,,:biggrin_25525: seriously though, I'd go with a KW today,,,with a 800hp tugboat motor, only because, I heard Mack is not what they used to be. All the county highway depts. use KWhoppers, and they move some pretty big machines.

What he said. Not the same as 70 80 90s Macks. But if you did go Mack pick the granite it's made for heavier work

They’re not Macks. They’re rebadged Volvos with a thinly disguised D15 Volvo engine. Depending on market that truck is sold as a Volvo, Mack or Renault. I’m going to rush out to buy. They’re all junk. Your application is screaming for a 4valve 350 if you want a Mack, but you’d be looking for an old R Model.

Those were awesome trucks. My neighbour had 4 of them. I think they were 788’s. Had 350 4 valves in them and Mack 9spd’s with 54” flat-tops and all the factory stainless and chrome on them. Really nice trucks for Mack’s at the time. He’s still kicking himself for letting those go.

I run a Pinnacle cxu, I love it. 445 10 spd manual. I'm rarely under 79k hauling a 7500 gal asphalt tanker, usually around 82-83k hauling propane. Running hilly state routes out of Warren PA I keep up with most of the hood trucks. It had 491k when I started driving it and it's at 610k now, very few issues, the ones I've had were SCR related. The exhaust blew out right before the DPF (what a sweet sounding engine) so I'm driving a 2019 Anthem now until it's repaired.

The Anthem seems to be a pretty big downgrade. It's a nice truck but it's very Volvo-ish. Lots of rattles and vibrations, mirrors in particular. It has the mp7 395 with the mDrive 12 spd. Runs ok for what it is, but it won't touch that 445.

Seems like they upsell the Pinnacle as the work horse…but I felt like the Granite was the one.

That would probably require me getting this dammed automatic restriction removed lol

I wouldn’t mind an older truck. Especially a “REAL” Mack.
