I'm looking at buying a 70 R model Mack to restore. It has a 237 mack with a Maxitorque 5 speed trans.. I dont know anything about this trans. I'm not going to be pulling anything just driving to shows.. I'm not sure how it geared. Would the 5 speed make the truck slow on top end? Would it be weak on the low end? Thanks for any info

There's a lot of spread between gears, low is very low, high is 1 to 1, the rest would depend on axle ratio.

old 5spd and 6spds for that matter and direct drive trans. it would be a good guess that its mated to 3.87 or 4.17 gears with 3.87 reverse is all little fast thats is the only down side there should be a 60-65mph truck

237 is a very good engine, and fuel efficent for the year. The 5 speed Mack transmission is pretty much bullet proof. Unless heavy loaded, or taking off up a big hill with a load, just drive it like a 4 speed.

You will have to rev the engine to 2100 in each gear, pull into netural, release clutch, shave, comb your hair, grab a bite to eat, make a phone call, and by then the engine speed will be low enough to get into the next gear. You will now be at 1200 RPM. Mash on it, watch the smoke roll out the stack, and do it all over again.

If the truck has 10.00X22 tires, or 11X24.5 tires on it (both tires are the same size around), with 4.17 rears, it will run about 72 at 2100 RPM.

My first thought was it would be a fun and simple little tractor to restore but then I got the thinking the 5speed might not be enough trans. Im not sure what size tires it has.. would it be possible that it has R20 tube type tires? Thanks for everybodys opinion..

The Maxitorque was revolutionary when it first came out.

Don't worry, 5 gears is plenty, I remember reading an article where an industry writer took one for a test drive with a Mack Engineer when it first came out and how unbelievable it was that the engine could pull at such a low RPM.
