I have a 98 Internation with a cummins M11 Plus.
Problem= dies after 20 to 30 miles of driving, just like you were to turn the key off, it just dies, gauges all read fine at time of death...BUT it dont die all the way, once it get to 300 to 400 rpms it revs back to around 1500 rpm then back down to 300... repete.
New parts before an after problem started. ecm, fuel pump, starter all before this prob. after problem new fuel lines, filter, cam position cencer.
Im getting flash code 3-1-4 #6 injector circuit
Cummins an Internation telling me this wont make it do as I described above.
Any ideas?? thanks for all your help, will let ya know when/if i get it going.
Thanks,
Mike

Should monitor fuel pressure to the engine when driving with a manual gauge. There should be a Compuchek fitting on the side of the pump. You will need to a Compuchek coupler to do this. You need around 30 psi to start the engine. 120 psi around 1000-1200 and 150-180 psi at rated speed full load. If the pressure drops first then the speed you still have a fuel issue. If the speed drops but the pressure stays ok it is something else. I would have a computer hooked up to see what voltage the ECM is getting and see if the voltage is dropping when the engine starts to die. I would guess you are limited to only basic hand tools. All you can really do is the basic checks. Make sure you didn't miss a hiding fuel filter somewhere under the chassis. Make sure all your electical connections are good and tight at the starter, batteries and the Cummins ECM power harness from the battery box. There will be a 3 wire connector around the starter somewhere too. Make sure it and the ecm fuses(should be in battery box) aren't corroded. Check over your fuel lines for any loose connections or rubbing. Your engine could also be sucking air. Again this hard to see with out a sight glass section at the pump inlet.

Update:
Was able to hook up to a CUMMINS computer, over 20 codes showed so tech cleared codes an told me to drive around them come back an recheck.
Drove 1.4 miles down the road, came back an rechecked, over 20 codes again.. lol
Tech said ECM was junk an walked off (wish i could make that much money that fast)
As stated ECM was new, less than 3 weeks old so was able to take it back an get another ECM at no charge but was told the one I brought back read good, they dont think its ecm.
Im sure it could be other things but wont know until tonight after I put this one back in an drive 20 or 30 miles.
Print out I got from Cummins about code 3-1-4 gives step by step what to check for, starting with ecm then to engine harness then injector cercit then through connector if problem cont. recheck on computer for other underlining problems.
Will update later.
Thanks, mike -
whats the going rate to hook up on puter.....

2nd new ECM just put in, only got to drive 10 miles to my house before calling it a night, will let ya know more tomarrow! -
Cummins ECM will log codes for internal errors that will confirm a bad ECM. Lots of codes like that, usually if they are all sensor related may be just one sensor shorting out the entire sensor harness. Bad ground connections, low voltage will reek havoc too.

so did the ecm fix it

Sorry it took so long to reply, yes the second new ECM fixed that problem, guess you just never know what you get even when its new
