Driver drove it into the shop a few days ago (it was spitting and coughing like usual until it got warmed up...I'm sure this is a clue). Now it won;t fire.

Thought maybe batteries were too low to run fuel pump so charged them up. nothing.
Sprayed some ether. It tried to start but quit trying when the ether ran out.
    Fuel tank reads 1/4.
Put fuel tank under pressure with compressed air. Nothing.
Checked for fuel after filter. Yes.
Checked for fuel going into cylinder head. Yes.
    Load tested batteries. OK.
No smoke coming from exhaust when cranking....nothing.

It seems like the fuel is getting to the engine but possibly the injectors are not squirting fuel. Whaat would cause that? Computer? Heck he drove it in there.

#1 does CEL (check engine light)come on at key on?If not, check fuses/wires/cables in battery box. Those power the ECM.Sometimes sputtering and coughing is sign of weak power/ground or possible bad ECM for Cummins.Good luck.

My niece's husband owned a T600 with a Cummins that would quit without warning. He replaced the ecm, but later found there was a wire in the battery box that would occasionally short out. It took months for him to figure it out. Once the wire was fixed he didn't have any more problems.

First thing you want to look at is with a test light and the key on test the power to the fuel solenoid, do it at the stud then pull on the wire they have been known to break and stay together with the shrink tube, check the fuses at the battery box and remove and clean all the connections.
The power wireto the ECM is by the starter you need to make a conector and test with a headlight to simulate power draw the outside two are power the inside is ground.
If you have power to the ECM, then there is fuel preasure you need 75 lbs going to 140 to start you need a compucheck fitting and an 200 lb oil filled guage.
If you have no fuel preasure it is possible the drive is stripped.
    Just a thought!

    Thanks for the replies.

    It runs.

Coolant was a little low so I topped it off. Also the driver side tank was 1/4 full (pass was full) I put 25 gallons in. Now the driver side is 1/2 full and pass side is full. Checked with a flashlight and a mirror to see if the pickup tube is covered up and it appears it is. So I gave a shot of ether and it started reluctantly. Idles perfect and responds well to throttle (no load).

However, when I shut it down it still doesn't want to restart. I have to pump the fuel pedal and after ~10 seconds of cranking she will catch and seems like it's running on 3 cylinders and then it will finally idle.

Losing prime and sucking air somewhere?

So today I filled the driver side tank to the top. Figured if it started better with 1/2 tank than 1/4 tank then maybe the extra head pressure will help it start even better if the tank was topped up. Sure enough that's what happened. It starts almost perfect now.

It seems to be losing prime.

sounds like it may be a pickup tube issue.

That's what I thought so replaced both of them last year (yeah I've been chasing this a while). Old ones appeared to be fine (couldn't blow through them when you cap off the other end).
