So I plugged in a set of hot plates that were rated as 1700 watts with both burners turned up to the max. My 2500watt cobra inverter gave me the LUP error message. The tech had installed the cobra brand 10' 4 awg cables and two 150 amp fuses on both the hot and ground. I can turn on one hot plate at a time just fine, but the second I try running both the voltage drops to below 12. I've noticed it hovers anywhere between 11 and 12 depending on how high I turn it up. Did I use the right gauge wire for the length? Is it fuse size or possibly a bad inverter? I feel like a 2500 watt inverter should be able to handle a 1700 watt hot plate just fine.

4 AWG is small in diameter to hold this load.
1700 watt : 12 Volt = 142 Amp. 4AWG can handle safely only 95 if you allow wire to heat up to 190F.

Best solution is put one more set of 4 AWG wires and connect them to other end of battery bank to distribute load evenly between batteries.

The times I got the LUP message. The batteries were bad.

Never had a problem once the batteries got replaced.

Run the engine and see what happens with the burners on. If you don't get the message. It's probably your batteries.

My truck was running and still got the LUP message. I don't think it's the batteries going bad, I asked him to check them before he installed it just to make sure.

You are trying to use an inductive load with a crap inverter, it will choke on it, so turn it down on one burner and move the temp up on ONE burner until it freaks out.

Wires too small, I use welding cable.
Oh, you have to have the truck running too for that large of a load.
I always have the truck running when I use my microwave.

3/0 or 4/0 according to the chart @Snailexpress posted for the full capacity of the inverter with the truck off. You're just ASKING for a fire with this setup. You might be able to get away with 2/0 if you run the truck to keep the voltage up which is the way you don't kill your batteries in a week. And that's not 3 or 4 gauge, it's 000 or 0000 which is comparatively enormous.

    Your batteries are bad,
The LUP code is low battery voltage.

Even a bad battery will test at good voltage and most places can't test batteries worth a ####. Each battery needs to be pulled off and tested separately as 1 or 2 batteries can affect the entire bank without you knowing. Ask how I know. Lol

As for your 4AWG cable it is more than satisfactory to do the job that is needed. Your inverter will never pull the amount of power needed to cause a heat related short for the amount of time and distance of cable you have or will use.

Look at your inverter as a transformer, your stepping up 12v xamp 1000watt to 120 Xamp and max 5000w surge for your inverter

Your hot plates are only running 15amp with 30 amp surge to start. 4awg cable at 12v can handle upwards of 90amp depending on the type of cable and on the low end 70 amps 12VOLT. Lol

Your system is WAY to beefy for what your running. Unless you have 150ft of 4awg then you need to start to calculate resistance into cable temp and failure. Which again. Your at max 15' of cable so it's not an issue.

    It's your batteries.

I was an electrician, and I built substations, which are GIANT power inverters converting ungodly power numbers to small numbers or the opposite.

Hearing a 2500 amp fuse blow is terrifying btw

Take the 120V amperage and multiply it by 10 plus a bit for efficiency.
