I was curious...why is there such a wide range of lumper fees to unload the same stuff or same amount of freight? One place might charge $50 while another charges $150 for the same product.

Also, if freight is pre-paid, I take it that it does not necessarily mean lumper fees are taken care of too (up front)? I've delivered to some places where I didn't have to pay a lumper fee b/c it was already paid for while others seem to ignore the "pre-paid" portion of the bills and charge a fee anyway...are they double dipping?

I used to work for a company that hauled direct for Publix. We never had lumpers at Publixes because they were prepaid.

However, we would also haul loads for Dole out of Pooler, GA to Publix locations and then we had to pay the lumper.

    ugh.

Prepaid: The shipper/seller is paying the freight, not that it is already paid for.
Collect: The reciever/buyer is paying the freight.
    COD: Collect on delivery.

He's talking about pre-paid LUMPER/UNLOAD costs. i.e the carrier in theory has an "account" with the unloader's union there and costs are billed to the carrier, and there should be no cash transaction at the dock.

The union unloading/lumper racquet adds a huge amount to the costs of goods everywhere, at all levels.

I knew I was in for a world of hurt at one particular grocery warehouse when I saw the in house lumper service workers were all wearing Teamsters jackets!

Making a delivery to any union place is a pain......

When you finally get the 300 lb forklift driver to put the newspaper down and unload your freight, he sure isnt happy that you disturbed him!

The lumper fees are paid by the shipper of the freight not the trucking company. When you pay the lumper your company is paying it but it gets billed back to the shipper.

yup floor load...but they hit every driver for the same #### amount.... took them 6 hours to unload me too...for 300 bucks and that amount of time I could have done it myself in about an hour...(wasn't anything heavy..just paper plates...) would have taken less if I put it in high reverse and back up and slam on the brakes lol...
