Anyone have an opinion about this stuff?

I've got an n14 with leaky cam follower seals $$$$. So I added 1 gallon of the stop leak. So far the engine is quieter, seems smoother the leak has slowed and the strangest thing is I picked up 1/2 mph. I realize that doesn't make sense. I keep very detailed fuel records though and I've been averaging 4.5 hauling about 120k with a 10'wide log trailer. Last fill was 4.95

    It's this stuff magic?

Lucas is sorta taboo around here. Your situation is about the only thing it is really good for with older worn out engines. Lucas just thickens up the oil and takes some of excessive clearances away. You can do the exact same thing by substituting a gallon of 80w90 oil.

N14's are known for yacking out cam follower gaskets. Nothing will fix that except a gasket. Checking for loose bolts may prevent it.
I am not a big Lucas fan over all or anything else that cures your engine in a a jug. Any body remember the deal that you poured some stuff in your oil. Had pills to drop in the gas tank every fill up and maybe some junk to put down the carburetor while running. Engine rebuild kit that saves you money right.
Anything to good to be true probably is. On the other hand I have a backhoe I was using for a bulldozer. Blew out the shuttle shift ( that is the hydraulic forward and reverse similar to to an automatic ) in front of the 4 spd box. Double dosed it with Lucas transmission stuff, its junk anyway. It is still running years later. It is a bit slack but was made to dig not doze anyway.
Called a company that rebuilds steering boxes about a problem I had. He asked if it had Lucas P/S stop leak put it because that will trash the seals in a ( Sheppard? ) and you have no choice.
Just my opinion that most of the stuff does no more good than a long neck Budweiser. I watched a guy pour a long neck down the carburetor on an Edsel at about half throttle one time.
Now I have to take some of that back because I never asked him if that fixed his car. Also that stop leak ( I thank it has a couple letters in front ) 205 is some pretty good stuff when you are working on junk.
Could your mileage be because of warmer weather and fuel blends?

Your better of using gear lube. It actually has high pressure additives.

    Tell us more...my friend...

    EDIT:

    whoa!...just found this on wikipedia...

extreme pressure additives are rarely used in motor oils. The sulfur or chlorine compounds contained in them can react with water and combustion byproducts, forming acids that facilitate corrosion of the engine parts and bearings.[2]

Why just use it as you would lucas. Isx guys swear buy this. And Lucas is just thick oil no additives so I would not use Lucas to lube my shot gun.

It was the specific lucas stop leak.

I don't know what to say. The leak has slowed down a lot. But the unusual thing is the mpg. I have about 15 of the exact same trips done. I got 4.2 - 4.46 each time. Then I add the Lucas and first trip is 4.95 then today is 5.1

I’ve heard so many old guys swear by Lucas and I finally jumped on the Lucas train a few years ago add I gallon w new oil change and then next time just oil but add a gallon after it burned a gallon as I was worried about sludge buildup because of how it looks when it leaks out on engine all gummy but I’ve Had my oil pan off twice and no sludge same with rockers changed one injector a few yrs back been using it at least I gallon even I more along with at least I gallon added yes she’s a leaker alright but at 1.2 million on overhaul and yes over 2 million on bull gear which is the main reason I use it at this point why not but no sludge so yes I reluctantly say maybe the old superstitious old timers were right I also changed gear oil once at about 1.2 mil miles used supers brand synthetic the heavier gear oil I think 130 wt or so used a gallon of Lucas same heavy synthetic I gallon in each box So 1 5 gal pail plus 2 1 gal Lucas and it still looks good like new oil at 1 million miles rears now have over 2 million miles on them gonna change again soon but The proof to me is there it’s good stuff even if it’s just gear oil

You asked about the stop leak I used the power steering stuff once about 6 yrs ago got it real cheap at pilot and it stopped the leak for a while at the seal on box lasted a few more yrs then got another steering box from junkyard for $100 put half Lucas thick ps fluid and half dextrin trans fluid been good for a few yrs now As far as engine been using Lucas for about 4 yrs now I put a couple gallons of the stop leak stuff after getting a bad rear main leak it worked for a while I’m pretty sure it’s the cam cover or rear engine cover/ bell housing either way it’s been leaking for a few years now will fix soon since I found a broken spring from the clutch gonna get all that done at once same with bull gear and radiator and front cover and harmonic balancer all at once because it’s cost efficient that way Lucas has definately bought me some time in my opinion I’m sure a lot of guys wouldn’t hesitate to fix stuff right away but with an older truck my experience has taught me you never know what might happen next and no longer believe in throwing money at a problem just for peace of mind Done that before and got in Jams too many times it’s amazing to me how much you can get from a truck by driving it easy maybe I just got lucky with this truck but I’m a believer at least on an older trucks as far as fuel mileage you’ll have to run a while to see for sure hope it stays up there. I use the wheel oil too hit a deer once it somehow broke the hubcap duct taped it and drove 10 miles with very little oil and bearing was fine I think Lucas gives a little bit of insurance and don’t think it hurts at all
