Hi y'all. My employer has asked for volunteers to start hauling LPG from one of our gas plants, and I'm thinking about signing up. What are some things I should know before I decide to do this? I've hauled chemicals and crude oil, but have never hauled anything in a bottle.

    Thanks.

OK, thanks. I'm just worried about making rookie mistakes.

Any mistakes and you probably won't be around to make anymore.

I am doing LP metered to farms and bulk to farms & bob tail supply tanks with a trailer. Before that I did heating oil 1 winter up north in a straight truck. I have only been doing it for a few months now. LP I think is no big deal once you have done it a few times. Like anything you have to respect it.

You need to know the temp of the product before loading, how much you can load on your truck/trailer for that temp and OAT and if it will fit into the tank you are off loading it in to. We are a carrier and some of the places we go to the product may not fit and need to know this before you start to off load as you can not take it back to where you loaded up at. So far I have been lucky I have been able to off load the whole load at my drops.

I was trained on 1 type of truck/trailer, with out drive shaft to drive off load pump, and my truck had a drive shaft. I bent up 2 shaft assy. before I had a way not to forget it was still hooked up before moving.

I can tell you it is a lot cleaner than hot tar! That stuff is just nasty and once on you it don't come off.
I was just told I am doing bulk concrete trailer next week so we will see how that side is now.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Be aware that gas bottles are notoriously top-heavy, besides just being plain heavy.

FuzzFace2: Thanks for the tips. What is OAT?

Mountaingote: I'm used to top-heavy and plain heavy, because I've been pulling tankers for most of my career. But I'm expecting more surge from gas bottles, as I doubt I'll be filling them to 90% or more like I do my crude tanker. Do bottles have baffles, or are the smoothbore?

All our bottles have baffles except one, and its not too bad once you get used to it. we usually run 70 - 75 percent in a 10 - 11K gallon tank. Real close to 84K lbs.
I think you will like it.

    RockinChair Thanks this.

What is the pay difference between Enterprise Crude Oil, and Enterprise Transportation Co? Will you still be an ECO driver, or will you have to transition to being an ETC driver? Does your seniority follow you if you have to transfer?

LPG, even cryogenics are easier than crude hauling. I would just be concerned with differences in pay, benefits, and hours worked.

I believe all ETC and ECO drivers have been merged into one. Either that, or all the ETC drivers who were hauling crude got moved into ECO. I'll ask all these questions to management when I talk to them about pay, hours, and equipment, and will get back to you once I have the answers.
