I noticed tonight doing a Pretrip that my trailer license plate is gone. I'm headed back to NC from Michigan tomorrow. I'll call it in to the leasing company tomorrow. How big of a deal is it to drive without it?

if you know the plate number just write it on a piece of cardboard and ducktape it to the back of the trailer.is illegal to drive without a plate but I think a nice officer wont give you a hard time about it.

Make sure you have the current registration and note the loss of the plate on your inspection sheet.
And you will be OK.. -
with the harrassement from cops these days. i don't think i'd want to chance my csa. specially if your under a load. i'm sure there's more then just writing it down on paper. like, the tags that go with the plate.
his company MAY have to order a temp paper plate to fax to him. or a temp registration. -
Probably get a big ticket if a cop notices it. Post #2 & #3 good advice.
This doesn't help you, but last time that happened to me I took a tag off an old storage trailer and installed it on the trailer. A year or so later the company sold the trailer and it still had the tag from the storage trailer on it; noticed it when the other company left the terminal with it. Odd thing for an adult to do.8thnote Thanks this. -
He should have already had one.. -
It would just be a missing license plate ticket, not a big deal.
I've gone over 1000 miles before with a missing plate and not been stopped, just show you registration if stopped and you will be fine. -
he might already have a registration. but he no longer has the plate to go with that registration.
you buy a trailer and haul it home. isn't nothing but a thing. you've got the bill of sale.
i don't see it being so easy once it's been registered.
hauling loads around without a plate. is an excuse for ANYONE to pull you over. and, in this day and age of CSA. and scales that will radio highway patrol.
out here, in utah. you get caught without a plate on your car. you get a ticket. even though you have a current registration. it's unlawful to drive without a plate.
around here, people LOVE to steal newly licensed plates.Last edited: Feb 23, 2014

You do right and call it in. Dont become a theif yourself as advised. The reason and ramifications of why another took your plate is to cover some major wrong. That tag runs back to you. Ifvit was stolen off your car would you steal anothers? Hope not. You did nothing wrong so just relax and call it in.

Yeah ... ain't no tellin' what that tag is behind now ... probably a load of narcotics being smuggled somewhere ... wouldn't want my name associated with that ... clear yourself and your good name while you still can, before the men in black with big guns and helicopters start circulating over your house
