Car dealers used to use a black book that listed values of cars similar to the Kelly Blue Book. Is there something like this for commercial trucks?
I'm looking to add a truck. I have my eye on a 2013 Volvo D13 405 hp day cab, 500K (yes, it is white). The dealer is asking $39,900 which I think is about $20,000 too much. I'd love to have something I can bring to the table that shows what a comparable truck sells for.
Looking to buy 2nd truck: Is there a black book for determining the value of commercial trucks?

Just go on truck paper, set the parameters you want and see how much your desired truck is going for

I'm just wondering what rubric commercial truck dealers use to determine value.
It is possible one doesn't exist, but highly unlikely.
When dealerships bid at Ritchie's or buy out a whole fleet's lease, there has to be something at play other than, "well, I think it's worth this. -
I don't know how accurate it is. Likely as accurate as Kelly Blue Book, i.e. not very.

When I went to the bank they looked up the value of the trucks and trailers I was looking at. So there is something. I just did a lot of comprising shopping then when I found the best of the bunch I ran it through the bank to see how close I was?

For brand new vehicles it is much easier to determine their value.
I know a few dealers that don't like to sell new vehicles because it's easy to compare from one dealer to the other, but a used vehicle is much more difficult, especially if you're dealing with Class 8 trucks.
You can have a 2006 truck that has a rebuilt engine new rears new transmission new tires new alignment new paint just serviced new batteries ready to go. What's it worth? Whatever it's worth is worth more than the truck that doesn't have all those new parts on there. What would that be worth to you?
Or you can have a 2012 truck it looks like it's been through the war and needs everything. What's that worth to you?
Whenever I buy the truck or piece of equipment, I ask what is it worth to ME? What price can I purchase that at and feel comfortable with what I paid. What price can I purchase it to either break even if I need to get rid of it or make money on it hopefully. When you arrive at that price it doesn't matter what the dealer wants because you have your price.
And Google Craigslist to check prices for comprable trucks. If all of the dealers on truck paper are 10 and $20,000 hi how can you get a value from there?
And you may find a private seller that has the truck you're looking for.
Good luck. -
