Hi Everyone,
First of all I want to say, that a great discussion forum this is! I love reading about different companies here, anyway. I'm a car salesman and decided as of today to go get my CDL and get in the trucking business. Please advise me of which company should I go with for my free CDL training and getting paid while being trained. It's very important for me to make at least $450 a week while I'm in the training so I can pay my bills at minimum. I live in Dallas, Texas area and I was considering Stevens or Swift but again I don't know about other companies and I'm willing to travel to nearby state if the training program is good and I get paid.
I will be looking forward to hearing back from you.
Thanks a lot.

@Chinatown will be along soon to give you plenty of ideas but just realize that there's nothing "free" about the training you're receiving at most of these company schools. You're signing a contract to work for them for x period of time at a lower than normal wage in exchange for their training. Not only do you get a lower wage than drivers who didn't go through company training, but most of the mega carriers that offer these schools are already paying much lower wages across the board to start with. Think about it and weigh your options. Most states have grants available to pay for your training at a regular CDL school. If you go that route you have SO many more options available to you. I got my CDL for "free" through a mega carrier and I could just kick myself for going that route.

Do you mean paid training during classroom phase or after classroom phase and on the road?
The only company I know of that pays during classroom phase of training is Roehl Transport, but they hold back the pay for 3 weeks and then give it to you. Roehl may still have school in Grand Prairie.
Some private cdl schools have part time classes for students that can't afford to quit their job while attending school. They hold night and weekend classes for that situation.
There's one driver that posts on here that went through FFE (Frozen Food Express) in Dallas and after completing classroom training and hitting the road with his trainer, he's averaging $1500.00 weekly now doing LTL trucking. LTL with FFE (Frozen Food Express) means you'll have a load with several stops and get paid for extra for each stop, plus the other pays involved.
Raider Express in Ft. Worth has free training and no contract to sign. Don't know the details.Last edited: Aug 6, 2018

Class A CDL Training at Schneider Training Academy
Dallas, TX
34500 LBJ Fwy
Dallas, Texas
37209
I don't know if this school is still in operation or not. Ask about their program for private cdl school tuition. I'd try Schneider, but only for the tanker division. I wouldn't go there to pull dry vans. With tankers you can "take home" a thousand or more weekly.
Schneider will also pay for private cdl school for good candidates. Contact Schneider about this, but be firm, you're only interested in their tanker division.

The companies I've listed, all do hair follicle drug test. You need to be clean for past 12 months to pass this test for trucking companies.
To pass a urine test, you need to be clean 90 days.
The only companies with cdl training I'm aware of that do urine test are Millis Transfer in Burleson, TX and Stevens Transport and Prime Inc. -
With Millis you would have about 4wks unpaid but once you get on your trainers truck you will make more than any other training company. So just depends if you can survive for 4wks with no pay..
