Find a Mercer hand at a truck stop, tell him your thinking of signing on, but you would like to take a look at their load board before you decide.

That what i did. Looked at 1 of their drivers ipad interface was nice . However looked like everything paid 1.60 1.72 to truck. Im ok with that but theyre opportunties to get paid more on some occassions. I leased to a carrier im avg 2.20 to truck loaded 1.63 all miles. But i can work both contract and spot with no trailer fees except reefer fuel. Discount shop tolls and fuel

Everyone is saying things are worse this year than last. I think I averaged around 2 last year with deadhead through Landstar. My minimum to be worth it is 1.80
Had one of Mercer's flat guys show me his average for last 12k+ loaded miles was 2.43, but I know that flat is a little higher than van
I love the company im with but they use Truckstop and are averaging 1.40 all miles I think, maybe 1.50, it was depressing so I quit tracking it. (Company truck not mine)
I do wish I could play with the actual board for an afternoon. Landstar probably averaged 1.60-1.80 before their cut on their board, I just filtered them out. Id go from looking at 100+ loads in an area to 10-20 that were over 2.80 before the cut. It means they go quick, but there were enough of those loads there that if you stayed active on the board you could keep moving at good rates. I guess it wasn't worth the trouble to most, I spent 20-30 hours a week on the phone between original booking and countless cancels when they booked it cheaper elsewhere -
If it was from the Mercer web it's not accurate and everyone leased onto Mercer should be able to tell you that. Its ALWAYS a lot higher than it really is.
For the year 2019 the Mercer web showed me at $2.34... My calculations which are 100% accurate and true showed me at $1.83 for ALL miles my truck turned... I pull a flat bed.
If drivers at Mercer are pulling in 2.43 to the truck AFTER mercer takes 25% do you really think they would have the amount of turnover they do? Would they need orientation twice a week? Just sit back and think about it.... -
Dollar 83 would be fine with me right now. Granted I do know van would likely be lower.
What were your other reasons for leaving?
Mine for Landstar even though it was good money were the obnoxious amount of copy pasted loads on their board which were no longer actually available. Then they burned me over paperwork and ruined a dedicated I had set up get away from the board -
Im avg 2.20 to truck loaded only after fuel on the odometer . I use Fogline software. Leased to a carrier pulling reefer. Im currently doing a White Castle load paying 1925.00 on 514 mi . its a contract load. Theyre good paying loads out here, but they're contract mostly. Yesterday in Osceola IA booked a load 1800 to OH on spot market. 573mi

I like to run short loads in the Ohio valley area and those loads here have all been washed up. Too many Mercer trucks and just not enough of those loads anymore.
$1.83 may seem good to you but for me that's terrible. Shorter loads should come with a much higher RPM than that as you arent getting a big gross number like you do pulling for longer run miles. Not to mention a lot of what I do is heavy loads of steel and aluminum that require tarps. The way to make it work here with doing shorter loads is to limit the deadhead miles and I've been finding myself having to deadhead further and further for those loads which just isnt making sense, business wise. $1.83 pulling a flat in 2019 doesn't cut it.
Way to many loads here are simply copy and paste from CH Robinson load board. I'm tired of giving up 25% of my revenue for that. Puts me in a tough spot to not haul those loads because then it's either sit or deadhead.
I live between Indianapolis and Chicago. I absolutely cannot stand the Chicago area agent that Mercer has. Lots of shady tactics and crappy shippers with loads going to horrible reloading areas with that agent in Chicago. The Indy agency isnt that big and has limited freight especially this year, so leaving out of the house is more than a hassle I would like to deal with anymore. Not to mention a couple of the shippers I liked loading out of in my home area Mercer has lost those accounts for more reasons than one.
That brings me to another point. They seem to continuously lose more and more customers here because of the "We hire anyone" business model that they have seemed to go with which a lot of the truthful agents and coordinators at Mercer will tell you. And for that fact a lot of the truthful drivers here that dont run around with blinders on should be able to tell you. Seems to be a problem that continues to get worse.
I could continue to go on but I'm not going to. Atleast you get somewhat of a idea why I left.Cat sdp, I glide 47 and Jatlyons Thank this. -
JonJon78 Thanks this.
