I am currently a company driver, but I will be purchasing my first truck next year. I want to go ahead and get set up with an accountant who's familiar with the industry. Can anyone help me out with a recommendation?

As an O/O I use Andrew Griffith. He is very good. He is licensed to practice before the IRS and has a100% win for audits. to me it matters not where they are located as long as they are good. We can communicate. I have been using him for several years and he is very good with transportation regs and laws.
If your accountant can not practice before the IRS you don't want to use them as it is YOU that will have to go before the auditor not the account. Andrew Griffith also teaches tax law and has a masters degree in it. Bookkeepers dont get my business as they are just that.
Rate per month is very fair. I fax all the receipts to him as I get home. I get quarterly reports. I am very happy with his services.

go to a large Accountiong firm with at least several CPAs,,if your accountant is sick or out of the office you still have other that can look after your account, Check out whom ever you choose with the local Better Business Bureau . Maake sure they are honest, any tricks they try and the IRS audits you,,you pay the penalties,, Make sure he is a CPA with several years experience.

if you call it a business you do. One bad audit can put you out of business over night. If it is a hobby it is not tax deductible. A good accountant can help you reduce excessive spending in the wrong places and improve it in others.

What kind of an operation would you be running, where an audit could put you out of business overnight? And with only one truck to manage, why would there be any excessive spending in the first place?

I will give you an example.
I have freinds that had a Bookkeeper to do their books and taxes. She was not licensed to practice before the IRS. They got audited. The book keeper was not allowed by IRS rules to go with or for them to the audit. The idiot IRS auditor denied the fuel purchased over the year. Denied the tires purchased for truck and trailer during the year. She told them to insulate the home better. No mobile home needs $9,000 in tires. Denied. They appealed to the supervisor. He did not come out of his office and refused to even look at the paperwork. Our tax dollars at work.

.This is a costly affair. As they had to make appointments to see the IRS and and couldn't work as they lost truck and trailer. The IRS doesn't care if you have to come back every day for a week or a month. MY friends filed for bankruptcy. It messed up their retirement and they lost their truck and trailer. Still owing $20,000 in fines and penalties to the IRS.. That $20,000 turned into $30,000 when all was said and done.

They bought back the truck and trailer from the bankruptcy court for $6000. That IRS nightmare lasted for nearly 6 months until it was settled.
That is the best reason in the world for a qualified Accountant licensed to practice before the IRS I can show you.

I think every dime I pay my accountant is peace of mind I won't have to get audited and if so I don't have to go to the IRS audit with or with out him. He does it all. Worth every dime I pay.
