I am looking at adding an RGN to the stable. However, the rates I am seeing are a joke! Is equipment only paying $2/mi. right now?

No. If you're using DAT's lane averages, it gets really weird when it comes to specialized equipment. It seems to take everything that they tag as specialized into account.

    Oxbow and nightgunner Thank this.

I know they can be crap. The logistics manager for my company told me about 3 months ago that we tend to shy away from heavy equipment loads because many of the rates are still in the tank due to some larger companies driving rates down.

I dunno. I recently paid a six axle $2000 on 399 miles, south of LA up towards San Jose. Took a look at DAT's lane average for an RGN, and it was saying $2.52/mi. I dunno. Just something to look at. I haven't really looked into posted rates here lately.

RGN loads out of Denver are usually the highest of the offered rates on ITS. I wish they'd split up the specialized averages, there's no point in having load outs in the same pool as RGN. But they're typically around $4-5 per mile, today there's even one for around $18 a mile on 1000 miles. I'm not sure what it's about, though.

there Is a reason that load is being offered at $18 per mile and it ain’t cause the broker wishes to make the truck rich. And $2000 on 6 axle short haul freight is barely workable if it has any size involved.

Go ahead just jump right in. Any idea what weight permits cost or pilot cars? Here is a hint - more per mile than most mega fleet lease operators make.

To answer the OPs question - if you have work for it and someone decent to run it, go ahead and buy one. Just be aware if you put a tool in it and they hit something or blow a permit or route or axle weight - it is pretty speedy to undo. How about an $8000 overlength violation that voids your permit and they write you for weight over 80,000.

I do mostly local and run that stuff hourly. When my customers want to go on road trips some are fine with still going hourly, some want bids. Usually my bids for those come out to be more for what it would have taken hourly. I've been on enough wild goose chases to learn my lessons!

I'm not at the office right now, but we were looking at 56k weight and legal dimensions, if.memory serves. I started at 1900, he offered 2100, we met at 2000. That took place five minutes after I posted it, so I mean, I don't think that one was unreasonable.
