I was just offered a 1979 international cabover with a 2 stroke detroit for $4300! I had an ad on craigslist looking for older trucks for a low price, but...i wasnt expecting *THIS*!
More specifically, its a 1979 international transtar 4070B cabover, with a detroit 6v-71 engine. I have a long list of work that was done to it recently, but i didnt figure anyone here needed to see it.
I'm going to check it out and try to buy it if it turns out to be in as good a shape as the guy claims it is. He says it basically just needs a paint job but it "still looks good". I'd love to own a truck like that!
I'm not sure if i could handle it OTR, but if its really in the shape he claims it is in, it would make a nice show truck, or a wrecker, or a truck to tow an RV or something. I just want it!
Also, it has a single stick 9 speed eaton transmission in it. Is it just me, or does that transmission not belong in that truck at all? Is it even enough gears? I thought these were supposed to have 9 shifters, not gears!
Could this actually be realistically used OTR? Whats it like to drive this thing? I saw a two stroke kenworth longnose a while back being used OTR, and i even saw a 1960s peterbilt at a truckstop once, with a guy sleeping in it, hooked to a seaeld trailer....are these guys just crazy, or is this workable?
I remember last year i rode in a 1979 peterbilt 379 wrecker...i went to get in and there was no door handle there...then i look up, and its at the top of the door like a car....wayyyy up there, LOL...![]()
lol i was offered THIS...

Might be a fun project to fix up for a show.

any idea how many MPG this would get?
And the current owner says that he was driving it coast to coast for a couple months last year...Im thinking....uncomfy? But if he can do it, maybe i can too...
I have pictures now. Truck looks like it is in VERY good shape for its age. Someone has taken care of it. It's not just some NAFTA truck from california. I'm going to take a look at it when I get home and test drive it, but I do believe I want it...for what im not sure, LOL..but i love these old trucks...
The pictures are in a powerpoint file for some reason, so i'll have to convert them before i post them here.
The only thing i see wrong with the body and interior is just fading from age. There's also a little rust on the bottom of the doors, its more than surface rust but it doesnt look real bad. I should be able to repair that.
You know whats odd though, is it looks like it's a flet spec truck. I see steel wheels, less gauges than my werner truck has. Then what the hell is it doing in good shape after 30 years.. -
Good lord, do you see those "tires"? Maybe it really is a nafta truck!
Some searching on google found a guy that claims to drive one of these OTR..his doesnt even look as nice as this one.Haha...

Ducks Thanks this. -
If you feel comfortable running it then there is no reason why you couldn't run OTR with it. My first truck was a 1981 kenworth cabover. I bought it for 5500 in 2005 and ran it through 2008 averaging 3500 miles a week never left me anywhere. I picked up a 2000 kenworth cheap from a friend to help him out and started running it. So the 1981 was a backup or toy until I was offered 14000 for the cabover, I was dumb and let it go. I pull a skateboard and averaged 5 miles to the gallon with a cummins 444 under the cab.

It will be a blast to run, but practice putting your pants on lying down, and keeping all your personnel things in the side box. Remember, there is only room for you in the sleeper. I drove on like yhis many miles, while lots of folks say the industry has only gotten worse, trucks have gotten much better. Yes it would make a great show truck, but wont make you any money, no matter how much work has been put into it, something else will breakdown.
I wish you lots of luck and many safe miles,

Im assuming this is your opinion?? Or fact?? Because between 05 & 08 my 81 was a money making truck. Every truck has to be kept up or you end up with a pos. The truck pictured looks like it could use some work. -
That truck is identical (right down to the color) to a truck my Dad and uncle bought brand new. It was their first as O/O's.
It didn't last too long though...Dad bought a cabover Pete in 1980, and Jack continued to run the International for a few more years, then sold it and became a company driver for Metler. -
I used to run for Cherokee lines out of Cushing Ok. Was assigned to a couple of these beasts and even ran team a couple times. Yes, I was young and dumb.
1989 Pete Thanks this. -
I tell you what though. I will be finding a way to mount my 19" HDTV in there. And it WILL fit. I dont care if i have to pull the passenger seat out to make it fit either.
But i can add extra storage to the outside of the truck..
My dad used to drive trucks like this. Well, a little bit newer, but not much better at all. Took ONE suitcase with him with all his stuff in it. I don't know how he did it. I'll have a little bit more with me!
I honestly dont keep much in my truck anyway.
Break down all the time? It cant be any worse than a brand new freightliner cascadia. My floor in the front of the truck is flooded right now, dash is flooded, etc, from the windshield leaking *That bad*....
And you know what, you've inspired me to actually buy this #### thing.
How much stuff did you have with you?!
Did you atleast have a sleeper with two bunks? What happened if you got laid over?!
