To my knowledge anytime that truck moves it has to be logged. Say you log off duty in one town and back on duty in another town, the DOT would be all over that.

If you ever got caught with your log book not caught up.... they will say, "I don't know where you been".

You could always log it and rip the page out afterwards. I didn't say that, lol. Someone edited my post. #### moderators. :biggrin_2559:

If your empty can you log off duty. Just because your in the truck doesn't mean your working. You could be driving to a bar, or to a town on off time to visit friends or whatever.:biggrin_25511:

I stand corrected again. I always wondered but never looked.
This doesn't exempt you from company policy or possibly insurance regulations.

It's official, straight from the FMCSA

Yep use to use mine to pull my 45 ft toy hauler from Tucson to the dunes in So Cal all the time and never had a problem, even threw the Jeep in the back and headed to Co for a week and just waived as I went by all the scales, did have a bear pull out at Raton and ride next to me for a while but eventually turned around and went back the way he came.:biggrin_255: I do run around B/T when I'm visiting the kiddies in Co. and log off duty and just wright what I'm doing in the notes (POV from Denver Co to Monument Co for example) and have never had a problem at any of the scales

When bobtailing to hometime, or to walmart, etc, just log off duty. If bobtailing to go pick up a load, or going to a shop, must log it line 3 and 4.

I'm on e-logs. I've double checked this with our logs dept. For Prime, only if you are a lease operator or owner operator, you are allowed to use the truck for personal conveyance. There is a line in the e-logs just for that purpose called Off-Duty Driving. If I am bobtail, I am allowed to move the truck anywhere I want to for my own usage. This applies whether I'm under dispatch or not...but there is one hitch (there always is...) I am not allowed to drop a loaded trailer somewhere just because I want to go to the grocery store. If, however, I am at a shipper and it's going to take them forever to load me, I can drop the trailer in the door and go take care of personal business while logged off duty. I just can't drop a trailer while in transit. Company drivers do not have this option. If they are in the truck, they are considered to be on company business. (needed to add to this: If I am bobtail and have been dispatched to go pick up a trailer, I have to log that as driving time.)

That was different at Swift when I ran company for them. They let me use the truck for personal business and not log it. I don't know if that's changed since I was there, but they never gave me any grief over it.

Pssst....the dirty little secret about trucking. ALL your time is logged....and I mean every last minute of it, even that week you spent in Cancun, until you retire from trucking.

But in answer to your question. Yes, personal conveyance while bob tailing may/must be logged on Line One. You can log on 3 or 4 if you wish.

Never operate a commercial Vehicle, without an up to date log....period.
