I live in San Diego, ca and just got my cdl A. I planned on going otr but a family member has become very ill therefore its no longer an option atleast for a while. Could anyone give me some advice on who would hire a newbie. I have a lot of local jobs in mind such as beer distributers, trash truck, line haul and fresh food deliveries. Would I have any chance with no experience? My choice would be food deliveries or line haul but in would do almost any driving job that is local. I have no other skill so any driving job would be better then a minimum wage job flipping burgers or the likes. Any advice please, I was so ready to get out on the road and see the country but I'll settle for anything where I can grind some gears. Thank you

The options you listed, beer distributor, trash truck, etc are your best options. Most companies prefer experienced drivers due to insurance. Best of luck.

Thank you form the reply. Are food and beverage distributers as big on experience as the others?

Side loaders always take on newbies... Coke, Pepsi, Beer Dist. etc... m:re a matter of are they hiring. Lots of physical work and around town driving, but if you are up to it that may be your best route.

Personally, too #### many hills in SD for me to be pushing a hand truck in and out of those stores, but I'll bet its great excersize.

I say try indeed.com and just get yourself a resume and a cover letter, do some reading on the companies you want to score with and go for it. With the right door opened you can easily get a job with a decent company.

I lived in San Diego for at least 29 years. I had my CDL couldn't find any work as a Class A Route Driver, but I wasn't brainstorming enough to make it happen.

Anyhow, I was working this day to day labor job, and on a break I stepped outside for some fresh air, and this guy I knew was making a delivery driving for Conway, and I was like man.........you got your CDL and you drive for Conway dude.......

He was like yep..... I said I have my Class A license, he said what are you doing here? I said working a day to day labor. He stopped instantly, pulled out his phone and made a call to a company name "Best Overnite Express" and I got hired on as a Class *B Route Driver.

50 to 55 plus hours a week, making 13 bucks an hour. I was even given the chance to do some pup backing occassionally, but I wasn't wise enough to practice everyday, so I didn't end up scoring a Class A Route driver with them until after I went OTR for a short period of time.

Moral of the story is that, you are now a professional driver, congrats!!! Now think above the normal approach to scoring a job and be career minded.

You may have to start on with a company as a C driver, that has both A and B positions!?!?!?! You may have to start out as a B driver, and get enough favor from your boss to say you can practice backing 28 foot pup trailers off the clock?!?!?!?

You may find a company like Conway who says, "Hey you already have a jumpstart but we were just discussing telling HR we want to hire someone for our CDL trainee position. We will hire you, and train you as if you don't have your CDL, you'll have a job with us, as long as you endure this training process, and live by our driving sta ndards."

My friend, my point to you is don't let anyone tell you, you don't have enough experience. This is a new day, I'm telling you, you may go somewhere that is immediately looking for someone like you. The sky is the limit. Just consider the companies you would not mind working for and do more than fill out the application.

Be innovative! What if you found the right company that actually decided to hire you because you were radical enough to standout with a sign saying Class A driver hire me to drive your straight truck or something else?

Maybe not that radical, maybe that is just right for a casual company atmosphere!

Sky is the limit, just go for it. You may hear some no's right away in the beginning, but keep asking, seeking, and knocking on doors in the name of filling applications out online and even visiting some places.

Look at the Port of San Diego may have to start on as a crew member and in 6 months to 3 years move to crane operator make like 125,000 a year or something.

Coca Cola near and Federal right off I94.... Coca Cola anywhere is San Diego...

Pepsi near Ruffin Rd? City of San Diego..... try thinking of skills you can combine with your CDL like getting endorsements.

I know of a smaller outfit out there called GDX Express or GDX Trucking. I'm not sure if Best Overnite has an outfit or a hub out there anymore I heard they send all their drivers from Irwindale, CA. to make runs out there.

Other people mentioned trash trucks, Waste Managment, I believe the other major waste company out there is EDCO or something....

I will leave you with this...

I once complained about not having a job, and one day I came across this teenager who told me about the new job he just scored. He said he put in about 150 or more than 150 resumes at the mall. He said only 1 called him and he had been there for only 2 weeks and they were giving him a raise.

I rejoiced with him, but I was totally like dude, wow over a 150 resumes!?!?!?! :smt109

And I was complaining about the 4-7 applications I put in and didn't immediately score.....

He said he put in 150 resumes at the mall.......

Sky is the limit, my friend go for it.....:smt024

As the others suggested, I would look into the LTL companies like Conway and UPS freight and so forth. Sometimes you can get them to hire you for dock work loading/unloading and do that for a year or so and then transition into a driving position.

I want to sincerely thank all of you for your advice I really do appreciate it. Was doing some more thinking today and I am going to try pepsi, come or some other beverage dist. Get some experience for a while driving and then check into ltl companies at like 6 mo experience, unless of course I end up liking my first job of course. For some reason it just seems like beverage distribution like side loaders would be a lot easier to get hired on to and ltl would like some experience. But really I have no idea. I'll keep you guys updated on what's going on and like always more input is greatly welcomed!

If you have no luck with Pepsi or elsewhere you might want to try Robertson's Transport (Robertson's Ready Mix), they haul sand and gravel in double bottom dump trailer and hire the inexperienced. I see their trucks all the time around Southern California and every single one of them just about has a nice little sign on the back saying "Now Hiring, We Train" along with their phone number which I don't remember. Just look them up though. I would probably be working for them now if I was old enough. I couldn't find their hiring requirements anywhere online so I called them up, they said minimum age is 25, making me 2 years shy.:biggrin_2552:

Now if you do get on with Pepsi can you let me know the secret lol. I tried to get on with them last year. I really thought I had an in with them. My grandpa's cousin as well as a good friend of his both retired from Pepsi, out of San Diego no less. So I spoke with my grandpa's friend who gave me the cell phone number of someone I guess who is important at hiring with Pepsi. So I filled out an online application and called this guy a few days later, called him a few times in fact and left him a few voice mails, never heard back from him.

    Good luck.
