I have a question and need some opinions out there. This is something that I often struggled with when driving before, and now that I'm applying at places again, I'de like to see what others have to say about it, or do.

In my last company, when most of the drivers had to load/unload at night, they would log it in a manner that would give them the most out of getting a 10-rest on the books. That way your shift didn't end up being flip-floped into night driving, but also because most of the time they're sleeping in the sleeper while being unloaded/loaded (but you get wokin up often).

What I'm wondering is, with my next company, if I log it exactly like it is (which would be mostly sleeperbirth with On Duty flags splitting up any chance of getting a full 10 hours of rest), will most companies realize this and purposely not make appointment times that are in the middle of the night for you?

I mean, if I end up having to wait until 2pm the next day to get a 10 hours of rest, then only drive until say 10pm (Regardless of the load) and say 'going to sleep, I'm tired' will the companies put a note in the computer saying that he can't drive at night and also logs the night loading/unloading? Or will I end up sitting around all the time waiting on loads?? In my case I've had to work around the company and shippers/receivers schedule all the way. This tends to be taxing to me to always be so convenient for everybody.

I'm thinking that if I log the night stuff exactly how it is, then the companies won't put me on those shifts because they'll be losing money with a driver who won't move stuff around for them on the logs. To me, it's like changing the way they'll dispatch you but no words exchanged (which ussausely hasn't worked in my case anyway). But I'm just afraid it could also result in 1500 miles a week and backfire.

Anyone have experience with this?? Are we supposed to be so versitile that are bodies can change its sleeping patterns on a drop of a hat?? What do most of you veterans do?

I have read that is what you must put up with being a trucker. I had to do it that way but I never had to unload any of my loads.
What I was able to do is macro arriaved at shipper then I would go to the sleeper and get some sleep untill they called me to go to the door and anything under 15 min at my old company we did not have to log then I would bump the dock and then go to get more sleep while they unloaded me it takes time to sleep with the truck moving up and down and the noise from the unloading but you can sleep if you are tired enough.

THE WAY MY TRAINER PUT IT. "YOU GOTTA SLEEP WHEN YOU CAN"
WHEN I ARRIVE I SEND A MAC 1/11 LOG 15 FOR BUMPING THE DOCK, THEN LAY DOWN TILL I GET A DOOR OR HIT THE DOCK AND LAY DOWN TILL THEY ARE DONE. I HAVE GOTTEN SO ACCUSTOMED TO THIS I WONT WAKE UP UNTIL THE SUBTLE SOUND/BUMP OF THE DOCK PLATE BEING LIFTED IS HEARD. I THINK I COUNT PALLETS IN MY SLEEP LOL:biggrin_25525:

Well, sounds like one of those things we just have to put up with being a trucker then. Concidering all the other stuff that I like about the job, I guess getting terrible sleep maybe 1/5 nights isn't so bad really.

It depends what can be proved. If the bills notate times you arrived, started loading, finished loading and left it's very possible DOT or a log auditor can determine the time you was dealing with the load.
Some companies are simple and that means it has the date and location only so we can only check that you was there.

Teh biggest thing is make sure your in the location you really are in and to log line 4 time dealing with it. I hate to set you up for failure because lets say this happens

You get to a customer early. So you sit 2 hours, then you get out deal with the paper work customer crap and that. and lets say the customer notates the bills or somehow you send a macro (qualcom msg) to your dispatcher saying they started to load me. There is proof you just was working.
I guess you need to find out what kind of proof the company has on you to show DOT.

DOt usually just gets the paper documents you submit in with your trips to get paid and dispatch records. But again I don't want to set you up to fail/get in trouble.

But always log line 4 time to deal with it. & if you have to assist/stand there etc it must all be logged on line 4.

Lurchgs and Captain Canuck Thank this.
