I’m not gonna ask what load board everyone uses cause there are 1000 threads like that. I would like to inquire what someone’s experience is just running load board freight and no dedicated routes.

DAT and 123Loadboard are some of the biggest. Some of the big brokers and trucking companies have their own load boards. JBHunt,Coyote. Truckstop.com is a big load board also. Brokers often post their 10 loads 40 times on every load board.

I’ve been looking at the load boards and am thinking about supplementing my regular lane with some load board freight. I was just wondering is it worth dealing with the bottom feeders?

If they can get factored ya why not. Sometimes the bottom feeders pay good.

ASK lots of questions and then verify anything the broker tells you, like appointment times, weights, addresses, etc. Brokers lie. Don't find out when you deliver the customer isn't 24/7 like the broker said. Don't find out when you deliver on the weekend that the customer is closed. Don't find out when you pick-up that the load isn't 10,000 pounds, but 45,000 pounds. If the broker tells you the moon orbits the earth, call NASA and verify it before you believe it. Brokers lie. The advice I've heard is try and concentrate your loads at as few number of brokers as you can. Any broker that thinks you are only ever going to pull one load for him, will lie about everything and probably attempt not to pay you before the sun burns out. Don't be a "one and done" carrier. I'm told it takes more than looking for the highest rate per mile that is closest to you. Brokers will lie about where the load is so that it appear more attractive to more carriers. Brokers lie.

As far as Brokers go it does help to do repeat freight for the same brokers.

Now don't get me wrong, if you run load board Freight you are going to be taking on new Brokers as you go, but that's kind of rolling the dice sometimes.

Some Brokers are better than others. I would not say it to them, but there are some Brokers that are good that I'd rather work for less and know that if there's any problems they'll take care of it and if it's 2 in the morning there's someone there to answer the phone etc etc.

Anymore if I take on a new broker it kind of has to be that there is absolutely no other load available and that really is my best and only real option. Then I have to go through the packet and wait until the rate con comes and see if there's any nonsense in it.

Like sometimes you'll see a rate con that says you agree that if the receiver for any reason refuses the freight that you agree to haul it back to the shipper for $0.50 a mile or if anything is short or damaged you agree that you are completely responsible or some other outrageous rip-off thing that is only there completely to screw the carrier.

And the funny thing is the brokers will tell you, that doesn't mean anything don't worry about it, but when you tell them okay if it doesn't mean anything take it off the rate con they say, oh no no no I will just find someone else.

    Those brokers can shove it.

You mean you return empty on your regular lane so you're considering using the load boards to get a load heading home?

The boards have bottom feeders obviously but there are good ones too. As far as rates or viable well paying options is going to depend on the lane you run. Try looking around for a few weeks and see what's available to you.

Im getting burned out on my regular lane a little bit and my employer has given me the freedom to search the load boards to see if that would be worth it to run some load board freight for a few weeks. Just to get a little different change of scenery

I would try and find a localish run, or somewhere you regularly deliver to first, lot easier to take care of issues when closer to home, also, remember that there are a lot of idiots out there, and some of the issues they may complain about are their own doing with the broker.

i use Tql for my fill in loads, I might be able to make a couple extra bucks rolling the dice, but I know they pay and they usually have something to get me where I’m going after my LTL route from the same guy every week,

I appreciate all the info, one of these days I’ll consider going totally independent owner/op. Right now just don’t seem like the right time. I’d like to get some experience dealing with brokers before I take that step. Thanks again for all the replies
