I was recently approached by a driver who wants me to finance a tractor so he can haul livestock. He wants $85,000 to get rolling and supplied the following weekly figures:

    2800 miles x $2.70 = $7560

    $7560 Gross
    -$2163 Fuel @ 5.5mpg 2800/5.5 = 509gal x $4.25gal
-$ 250 Escrow ( For truck repairs, expenses, taxes, ext.)
    -$ 150 Insurance
-$ 950 Driver ( pay .34cpm ) I figured this is for my pay and if I ever get hurt and we need a driver.

$4045 Net pay for the week

This cant be this lucrative, what is missing here?

Your fuel mileage is way high there. Take it down to 4 to get your figure. Cattle pots run heavy. We had permits to run heavy and those ranchers want as many on the truck as they can get.

    levijean,
There are a lot of other cost that you do not have in the equation....
I am sure that a few other will chime in about the current livestock rates, as well as how the sale barns, feed lots and slaughter house's are or are not doing....
Bullhaulers Wife, and a few others on here will be a great source of information for you...

Not to get it wrong there is Money in it....

There is a gentleman on here who happens to have a few pots on the road he will be able to help you a lot also..

2.70/mile is a joke, that's a freight rate.... .34cpm for driver pay is way low as well... Like BHW said your mpg is a bit high for an average.. Oh, and right now is not a great time to get started, things are extremely slow...

When you haul cows that is one way. What you hauling back the left over cow poop which pays nothing you will be broke in three months. Bullhaulers around here get $4.00 to $5.00 per mile.
Then again ever once in awhile you can get a back haul.

So what would a realistic week worth of income & expenses look like? I forgot to include the trailer lease which he has noted @ $500/week, bring the net down to $3545.

    Levijean,

I have a question has this driver or you ever hauled fat girls?

When things are rolling the money can be good.. right now it is feast or famine.. there are a lot of cow pots sitting and they are swinging doors or pulling other trailers to make it by...

Your Fuel mileage is going to be closer to 2.5 mpg or 3.0 mpg
a full pot of fat girls can range in weight depending on who, what type and where you are going..

You have a lot of variables to put in the equation..

Do you have contacts at any sale barns, breeders, ranchers, feedlots, or slaughter houses?

These are some important things to have and knowing the right people is a big part of being successful..

Just like in any business the more you know the more successful you can be..

There is a huge difference between truck driving and being a cow hauler, or the owner of a truck.... I ain't gonna say nothing bad about the hand who is asking you to invest as i don't know them... But if that hand has experience 10-15 years doing it there is a good chance you could make money once the market returns...
Hauling for the wrong people can be a pain to get your money, or worse you have to chase your money down.. Not all but a select few are not on the up and up.. Most of the folks who are out there hauling livestock have some long term relationships with the people they deal with..

Breaking into the cow hauling part of trucking is not like any other trucking out there. some people would be better off going to Alaska and getting rich panning for gold..

Does pig hauling change the economics of it in any significant way?
