Well, today, I visited a truck wash facility for the 2nd time in my trucking career. Every company I ever worked for either had someone at the facility to wash trucks OR they had a crew to come out & wash trucks etc, etc....
The company I work for now had an 07 Freightshaker Columbia that they leased from Ryder & about half the paint had peeled off it & in the year that I worked for them, the only time it got washed was when it rained.
About a month ago, we leased a new 2015 Cascadia. A couple of days ago, I walked in the office & one of the company owners kinda smiled & said; I was looking at your truck & I dont think you have washed that truck have you?" I said; "no... no one has authorized me to spend the money to get it washed. Do you want me to get it washed?" He said; Yeah, I would like for you to get it washed at least once a month". Not a problem. I'll get that done.
So, I was going to be in Shreveport, La to load today near the Petro & I know there is a truck wash there so, I dropped my trailer at the customer & headed over. It was about 11:00 am. As I pulled up, it was about 6 trucks already there. Having never been at a truck wash but once before (about 2007), I didn't really know what to expect. I timed the trucks wash time. A truck rolled out about ever 20 minutes or so ... depending on what they done etc. I figured 5 trucks at 20 minutes each, that's 1 hr 20 minutes for me just to get in the wash bay, then 15 minutes to get out (just the truck). I said heck, its 11:30, I am going to pull out of line & go inside & get something to eat. Maybe by then, It will be thinned out & maybe only a couple of trucks in line. I ate, came out.... 5 trucks in line. I am #6. So I waited. I got out about 1:30.
I just didn't realize that truck wash places stay that backed up. An hour and a half to get a 15 minute truck wash? Hummm... Is this the norm?
They wanted to know if I wanted a regular truck wash, a RainX job, an engine wash..... ??? No, just a regular wash.
I just never read any threads here, how a truck wash works. Problems or concerns.
What works, what dont work.
Do I get outta the truck? Do I stay in the truck?
Do, I turn the engine off? Do I leave it running?
Do I want this or is that just something thats worthless & just makes them money with no benefit to me?
I learned (at this specific truck wash), they offer about 3 or 4 options, you turn the truck off cause they pull the hood over & wash all around the engine compartment, underside of the hood etc. Get outta the truck & go inside to pay $40.50.
In the end, it was an ok truck wash but nothing to really brag about.
What advise & input do you have for a "rookie truck wash" driver? Good, bad, do's & dont's...???

If your going to the blue beacons they are getting lazier everyday theyvlike to put the rainx on before rinsing the soap so I won't get it unless they agree to not put it on till after the soap is off I like rainx but its worthless when mixed with soap and will leave your truck with a dull finish whenbdone that way so be sure to ask how they will apply the rainx I've asked several locations why they do it that way and was told corporate says to do it that way do they only rinse the truck once instead of twice

Plan on a long wait to get trk washed when its nice,a busy area and during the day.Next time go late at nite, bet you won't have to wait. What you can do while waiting is clean the inside of your trk, windows floor that sort of thing.I always took my dog for walks while waiting for trk to be washed. Then once inside the bay I would go inside and talk to the attendant till they were done.

I had about the same experience the first time running through, our company had a set account at blue beacon, and wanted us to wash them once a month. 1: check with hour company and see what they want you to have done. Mine would authorize one thing, but not another. If you said yes to something that wasnt covered, BB would reject the charge and have to call the office to authorize it. 2: depends where u go but generally they are fairly busy, but they run off volume so they like to move the, through quickly 3: Shut the truck off, roll up the windows and close the sleeper windows...u will only make that mistake once...lol... Generally they will ask you to open the hood, takes the liability off them, and ask you to close it when done. Most have a sitting area to wait in. 5: if you dont have to pay for it, get it done!!!esp with a new truck. Keep it shiney and the owners happy

If I were you I would ask my boss and see what his budget for truck washes is. That will take the guess work out for you. Time for wash greatly depends what gets done and how many bodies are in the wash bay. I spent over 2 hours in line in Laredo, but I did not care since I had 8hrs to kill. I had my truck washed in Tacoma the other day and it took the guy over an hour since he was by himself. He did okay and I gladly paid the $55.00 it cost. My truck is usually a total mess when I come back from Alaska and I could have scraped the bugs of the truck with a putty knife. I sat in the sun and talked to a tanker yanker that was in line. If you are in a hurry or elogs other factors might come into play. Google Blue Beacon and look at their prices and locations and you will have an idea on services and cost. If you haven't had a shower you can hang out in the wash bay, but don't let them use the acid on you.
