Tree fell on my dry van. Part of one side wall is messed up. It's a total loss but I might still want to pull it from MS to IN so I can save the tires before scrapping it. What's the practical legal issues surrounding pulling a trailer that has structural damage but is otherwise still fuly legal? Thx

..... you can’t pull the tires off where it is?
Bean Jr., mustang190 and p608 Thank this. -
I could but then don't have a feasible way I can think of to get them home. That's why I asked the question that I asked, instead of some other question.

Leave it. But not on a public roadway. Find a place for it to sit a while if you ever see it again.
The integrity of the trailer is probably gone, it wont survive a trip anywhere. If you intend to scrap, find a scrap yard and make it happen. -
You can buy 3 or 4 2in straps and strap 4 of them down in FT. of 5th wheel, and the other 4 behind 5th wheel at the scrap yard the sides of it bring more $$ then other alum. types.
Dave Stone and Ruthless Thank this. -
Where at in MS? Ive got a friend who has a salvage yard in Waveland I think it is. If you're scrapping it then Im sure he'll help ya remove the tires/wheels before scrapping it.
Dave Stone and ibcalm19 Thank this. -
To answer your question, you can pull a damaged trailer as long as it still meets vehicle safety regulations. In plain English, lights and brakes must all work, tires good and it must not be over height or over width. Strap the loose pieces of the side wall and roof, make sure nothing is going to fall off and take it easy.
If the lower rails are damaged they will compromise the integrity of the whole trailer, you will need to chain them to keep it from falling apart going down the road. We tow damaged trailers for repair and scrap all the time. Biggest issues are bowed out sidewall or ripped off roof, need to be within legal dimensions.
Let me know if you need help with how to properly chain the lower rails, if they are damaged, I will get some pics of the process we use with the wreckers. (You need to tag me in this thread, I don't have PM ability).
Advice from someone that towed many damaged trailers from crash scenes, don't try to haul a load with it or twist real tight to make turns/park/etc. Even if the lower rails are still in tact with roof or sidewall damage the whole trailer is weak and can't take much twisting force. -

Thanks guys. To answer some questions, I'm up by Jackson. Another option Ive found is I found a guy will give me a pretty fair price for the tires, like 1100 for the set, and he will come out to the scrap yard to pull them off so they don't ding me for tire disposal. Then i could get another thousand in scrap weight for a spring ride Stoughton at $0.07 per pound. Yes one of the lower rails is bent. Here's a link to the video I uploaded on YouTube for the company accident report, shows a glimpse of the damage:
