I have a minor (15psi loss in 120 min) air leak at a plastic air hose fitting connected to a wet tank. Are there any tricks to repairing the existing fitting? Wiggling the fitting seems to make the leak worse... Any write-ups on how to replace the fitting? There isn't much slack in the air line to play with, but there should be enough to cut off the old and attach a new fitting.

    Here is a picture:

looks like the plastic valve is cracked and leaking. cant tell if it's plastic with all the black paint. push in on the collar of the fitting pull line out at same time, after air tank is drained then cut line off maybe a 1/4 inch back squarely important cut is straight. then reinsert tubing into the fitting fully. sometimes the plastic tubing is cracked from age or wear in the fitting and this will correct the problem.. if not the fitting or valve will have to be replaced. it's just a spring loaded collar that locks onto the tubing over time the fitting will wear a groove in the tubing allowing a small leak.

shortening the hose didn't help (cut was square and clean). Upon closer inspection the leak is coming from between the collar and the black plastic housing. Can that spring loaded collar piece be replaced individually or does that whole plastic 3-fitting housing need to be changed? Is this a pretty standard part a TA might stock or dealership-only? Flying J didn't have anything remotely close...

    thanks

whole valve will have to be replaced then. go to the dealer t/a...petro will charge you a fee to go get part then mark up the price 20% or more if they don't stock it. and if they do it will still be marked up substantially over dealer.

Switch it to brass compression fittings. Mfrs. use those crappy push-in fittings just to speed up the process.

That would involve replacing the black plastic housing with a custom one made to receive npt threaded compression fittings? Or would that be a pretty standard housing that would thread into the tank and replace the plastic one?

I fooled around with it some more and rotating the hose 90* twisted the collar 45* which stopped the leak. I don't imagine that will be a permanent fix though...

Well it looks like you only have a 1/4" and a 3/8" OD line so a T fitting would work.

Drain the air and remove fitting and run it down to a NAPA or any truck shop for them to match something up. If the line ends up too short just get a union and another foot of the same size tubing.

They have brass at Home Depot and Lowe's if you don't care about DOT stamp.
