Hey Guys. I'm new to the forums, however I have been reading the posts quite a lot lately. I have a question about a company with which I have been offered a job.
For starters I'm a newbie to tractor trailer and OTR driving. I Have had my CDL a few years and have been doing local and dump trucks. I was offered employment by Lawrence Transportation Systems out of Roanoke VA. They contract with United Van Lines for household goods as well as run freight. I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about this company and how good they are with their drivers. I have read some of the horror stories about some of the major companies so I hope they are not like them. On the plus side (I think) I have not been talking to a recruiter or anything like that. The guy that I've been dealing with is the operations manager. So I think I'd be able to trust him more, right?
Sorry to be long winded, thanks for your input.
Lawrence Transportation, Roanoke VA

Being from Roanoke I've heard of Lawrence...although I thought they required at least 2 years OTR. I do know they pick up a lot at HSN in Roanoke and take the load to various UPS locations. A lot go to Piney Flats, TN.
Sorry I couldn't be more of a help... -
I Pulled For Lawrence At One Time, Would Rather Drive For Swift, And That's Never Going To Happen!

I was interested in Lawrence as well. they had an ad looking for flatbed drivers. they seem to have antique Freightshaker fld600s. not sure if I'd want to live/work in one of those 6 days a week.

Sorry for the delayed update but I did in fact take the job at Lawrences Household division. It seems to be an ok company, the only problem I am having is I have been there for 2 full weeks now and have yet to step foot in a Truck. I have been doing warehouse work and am not too happy about it. When I took the job he said that there was always something to do if household was slow, like run frieght or equipment and I do realize that I need some training. But shouldn't I be doing some training relevant to my position as a class A driver?? Instead of loading and unloading trucks?
Forgot to add this the first time, yes Chief, their trucks are ancient. The best one in the yard is an old international Eagle, which is supposedly going to be mine. At least it has a good size sleeper compared to the rest. -
I haven't been to talk to them yet, but their mileage pay is too low for me. that combined with a fossil freightshaker. I don't want to go with yet another company and work my arse off and not get paid. just not enough available info on these folks to make a decision.

If you are in the household division loading and unloading trucks is what you will be doing when not driving. If they send you out you will be expected to load and unload at residence ors SIT which is putting it in storage. -
My point is that I am the last person to be utilized. I feel I should be out there learning my job before busy season really kicks in so I can be productive. Or when it does get busy, I will be sitting there with my thumb up my butt. -
I Tried To Warn Ya!

Stay ago can't say enough about this sorry company. For one thing Chip Lawrence is cheap the trucks are old and repairs are bearly done right they run all recaps on their truck so summer time there are a lot of blowout while on the road. The dispatchers will run you into the ground without any sleep the mileage pay is the lowest. The only thing I can say that they do is look out for the owner operators ie. You can pick a load out of ga that goes to nj good miles right, wrong they will tell you to drop it off in Roanoke for a owner operator give you a load that need to be back in ga the next morning. The freight is mainly local stuff like 350 to 400 if lucky miles radius of roanoke va. For company driver you get a brand new freighterliner flat top that they threw together. Mainly all the truck are a pile of junk the eagles are just old fleet master trucks that have rolled over a million miles. I hope all this information helped you out if not I can write even more. I hope more people read this forum and stay away.
Good Luck
