GREENSBORO, N.C. ' A North Carolina trucking company owner has found out that you don't necessarily have to have bad CSA scores (a lot of violations) to get in trouble with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
Someone telling the feds about your operation will do just as well, thank you.
Thursday, the Office of the Inspector General of the Department of Transportation announced that the U.S. District Court here last week had sentenced Larry Morris W. Trucking of Snow Camp, N.C., to 60 months of probation for making false statements relating to the falsification of drivers' Hours of Service records.

The carrier also must pay a $20,000 civil penalty for violation of records-of-duty regulations.

i was speaking to an company owner today who was pretty shook up after hearing this story

his guys rarely run more than 600miles a day and almost never go over their 70 (because of their lane), but keeping track of 15 experienced drivers merely on technicalities is almost impossible. He has had his company for over 20 years. No accidents, a few log violations and even fewer OOS

His drivers are experienced and safe, but occasionally they may run beyond the 14hr window and he helps them get their log book together

if the purpose of logs is to maintain safety, and there is a proven track record of safety, why should technicalities force a man to lose his business he has worked so hard for?

do we lose focus of the forest for the trees?
