Ok, so JCW needs some kind of software. Yes, I know that he needs to know how to trip plan by hand. And he does. But the fact that I can pull up mapquest and have a route in less than 30 seconds have a route is helpful for him for the general idea.

I've searched the forums, and most info is a couple of years old, and software updates at the speed of light.

I would like something to basically treat his time as a company driver as L/O or O/O so we can get a fairly accurate picture of what we could be doing in that arena. He needs trip planning/navigation and I would like a copy of that on my home PC and laptop.

Help? Also, smart phone ideas/carrier information would be handy. Need a family plan w/ 3 phones, upgrade to 4 next year.

For online maps, I like Google Maps (maps.google.com) because it is so easy to use and to "drag" the route to manipulate it. Then they are also easy to print or email to someone.

For something installed on a computer, two options to consider (with links) -

    1. CoPilot Live Truck version 8: Truck specific routing software using PC*Miler commercial routing. Very configurable for different styles of trucks and loads. Printable or emailable routes with truck stops, weigh stations, etc. Live features include real time traffic, weather, and truck location (if it is in the drivers truck and internet connected) Can be used in an office or as a laptop-based real-time GPS in the truck. ($149 downloadable)

    2. MS Streets and Trips: Very afforadable and has a free trial period to see if it meets your needs first. Very easy to use and there are a ton of downloadable POI add-ons available at sites like POIFactory and TruckStops Plus to add truck-specific points of interest. DOES NOT create truck-specific commercial routing so be careful (especially in the inner city directions it gives) that the driver realizes this. Also allows for emailed or printable route sheets just the other two options above. Can be used in an office or as a laptop-based real-time GPS in the truck. ($24.95 - $39.95 downloadable)

    DragonTamerBrat Thanks this.

Hmm, read over my post. One more question: What are the options for software to keep track of the accounting side of things? Like miles, expenses, etc and so forth. Thanks for the links!

    Try Pro Miles or DDL.

I use DDL (drivers Daily Log) for log book, it also has options to track fuel by state, truck expenses, and lots of other stuff. Demo system to try it out, even a gps connection to log stops, state lines, etc. A complete electronic log book.

For navigation, I use Delorme Street Atlas running on my laptop which sits on the passenger seat. been going to build a mount for it for 5 years.

Also have Microsoft Streets & Trips but prefer the Delorme product, primarily because its not Microsoft.

But it is not truck specific so ya still gotta think about bridges, and other roads that are not truck-friendly.
