Today while fueling the best truck in the world my wife became engaged in conversation with a driver fueling an inferior truck in the adjacent bay. He was interested in how well we were doing since his friend is leased to our company and had been complaining about his revenue. Somehow the topic of Landstar came up and he claimed they will, “nickel and dime you to death and double broker freight”. These practices sound nefarious. I have an ex wife so I know all about nickel and diming but am not sure what double brokering is. Please, if you can, dispel my ignorance.

Yes a lot of Landstar agents double broker. They sit and watch load boards, and when a decent paying load comes up they will book it as though they are going to put it on a Landstar truck. Once they have it booked, they take whatever money they can out of the load and repost it back on the boards, and broker it to another carrier.

It seems to me LS could clean up this system and set and enforce some rules to protect their BCOs from getting screwed. Why would LS allow this since they get their cut as a percentage of what the BCO earns?

And you've never caught a Landstar agent double brokering a load? Or seen brokers that actually put in the notes "No Landstar"?

Cause when I did, it was an everyday thing to see them double brokering loads.

I didn’t know they got a cut from the agent too. I’m confused. Do the agents work for LS? I thought they were brokers cleared to offer freight to BCOs but didn’t have to.

Why would a broker specify no Landstar?

I hate those double brokering Landstar agencies with a passion. Have not seen a good Landstar load on the open board in a long time. All double brokering crap.
Also, it's not that Landstar only promises their own trucks. For example a trucking company "A", let's call it a "Shady Chicago immigrant outfit" books a load, then their friends, who own a Landstar agency, post it on the open board.

When I see a shady Landstar business, I try to call the original posting brokerage and tell them what's going on.

Well I had a broker one time ask me if I was in any way affiliated with Landstar. He said every load he gave to them they double brokered it, and was suing them.

Landstar agents are the only ones I ever caught red handed, just cause how obvious it is with them.
