I'm a little overwhelmed with all the different information on here so I'm just gonna make my own question thread here. I'm strongly considering getting my CDL. I've wanted to do it for years but just never went through with it. I'm 29 now and tired of living paycheck to paycheck. I'm not really interested in OTR but I think it might be a good way to train because then I could learn to drive in snow and whatnot, considering there's none of that weather around here (it hasn't rained in about a year here in San Diego). If I ever move out of the area I'd want to have some training on driving in inclement weather.
Basically I'm just confused where to start. There's so much conflicting information. I have a job here and I've looked on google for different schools in this area. I could go to many of them on weekends and have my license in a month or two. OR I could sign with a carrier and just quit my current job and start with someone.
Does anyone have any suggestions? The schools in LA seem to be about 1000-2000 cheaper than the schools in San Diego. I could drive up there on weekends. Could be a fun weekend trip for a couple months too. Or are there good companies out of here that will train? Thanks for reading
LA or San Diego School???

well i wouldn't recommend going with a company you signed a contract then they got you and until you pay off the contract after i dont know how many years or you straight out buy out ur contract which in some cases if not more cost $5k
i went to this trucking school in la that only costed me $1000 and there with u till u get ur license -
I don't think you really learn that much about winter driving until you loose control. Sure you can just go slow or be easy on the brakes, but you don't really learn that much. You can do that for 10 years and still not really get it, not enough to save your bacon when thing turn bad all of a sudden.
Some go-kart tacks have a slick track. I think you would learn alot more from one of them than driving a combination vehicle in the winter. Sure the combination vehicles are a bit different when you are pulling a trailer or when the trailer is pushing you. But controlling the tractor is most of what you need to know.
Counter steering out of a skid, not over steering to get out of a skid and sending you into a skid the other way, are things that will keep you out of the ditch. You can get a good feel for that at a slick track without the high cost of going into the ditch with a big truck or risk getting tangled up with other people on the road. -
Weekend schools are good for people that don't want to quit their current job while attending cdl school.
Call the schools around San Diego and ask if they have weekend classes.
I know of only 2 trucking company cdl schools that actually pay the students while attending classes, but neither hire in California.
One company that would be a fit for you in San Diego is Danny Herman Trucking. This company has two facilities in Southern California; Calexico and Fontana.
Contact the company and ask which schools they hire from in San Diego. Living in San Diego will be a benefit to the driver and to this company.
