We have our own authority, pay kentucky fuel tax with a fuel surcharge, Got our KYU number and now have to pay a weight surcharge based on miles.
This is 3 different taxes for Kentucky. Is this correct or are we paying the surcharge twice?
Any does everybody running across Kentucky have to have KYU number and file this additional milage tax?

    Yep...interstate carriers...KYU. Intrastate...KIT.

KENTUCKY HIGHWAY USE LICENSE (KYU): This license is required for vehicles with a registered gross weight of 60,000 lbs. and above to report mileage tax. A surety bond is only required for carriers whose license has been cancelled for any reason.

KY, you must file a QTR w/d form for all miles traveled throughout the state in a given qtr.
your kyu # is a one time fee as i recall.

    Flightline Thanks this.

NY [HUT], KY [KYU] plus NM & I think Oregon all have 'third tier' taxation based on weight/mileage, etc.

The Feds have been fighting w/ NY for years. The won most of the last case so you no longer need the NY HUT sticker on your front bumper & you do not need the NYS specific cab card in the truck BUT you still need to have the truck signed on w/ NY HUT...if you get stoppd in NY without it you WILL have a problem.

    You are correct.
IMO a lot of people think getting there own authority is a snap, then they find out theirs way more to it than meets the eye.

Unless you stay on the toll road, they figure they must be nailing 5 axles hard enough at that point. At least that was the last I read, have NY on my IRP, but have avoided it between toll fee's, anti idle regs, NY HUT.

The Kentucky tax is simple, but a additional pain. The number is free, takes about a month & you do not have to display it on the side of the truck. Though not sure about intrastate or being based there as far as display.

Would sure be nice to simplify the state tax codes concerning fuel mileage etc to one system. But simplify & tax are never spoken in the same sentence anywhere aside from one running for office.

I am gonna be passing though Kentucky and then back through next month....and don't anticipate it much more. Is there a trip permit available or does everyone need the KYU to enter the state?
