okay so when i was there in 2003 with scuds inbound... the kbr deal started....honestly they were wearing "wife beaters" and were were wearing full "battle rattle" i as a E-3 making 1800.00 per month they were making 100k+ a year! i have a friend that is leaving for kbr in three days i have 16months left as a equipment operator for the navy ....operating anything from 20t tractors ("ccc"aka m915 ", 20 tone frieghtliner , and 20ton c.o.e.) as far as other equipment ... d7 dozers, cat 613 scrapers, 825f compactors, 635 case loaders, deeredesser loaders, cat /deere loaders graders, straight trucks, small flat beds...basicly i am builder bob !-lol

but back to the point of the thread... i have 16months left on my navy operator contracti will have 8 years in. should i get out ? i have a few options....

listed 1-being most intereted in doing...
1.-getting out becoming a instructor as equipment operator instuctor for a college type school .
    2.- becoming a union operator
3.-going to school for operating for operating then qualled as seabee and civilian qualified
4.- get out and hual something like cat d-7 dozers ...i love over size loads nothing like bumper to bumper traffic with 3 feet hanging off each side
5.- go with kbr and leave my wife and little 18month old here and make large $$$ but fat from home anywhere from 11-14 months at a time?
6.- suffer through with morons telling you how to operate a tractor trailer that only has worked on airplanes !!!!!

Well you bought into some ones line if you think they were getting 100+ in 2003 over here i was one of the first ones across the boarder in a truck and have been here ever since and you can't believe every thing you hear out of a truck drivers mouth. At first we made more like 80 if you were lucky then it went to like 90 if you worked 20 or 21 hours a day. Now 5 years into this and several promotions later and not driving a truck mind you i am just making over 100+ a year. Now if we are still here when you get out in 18 months its your choice but get the right facts before you jump on folks for what they chose to do for a living. You chose your path we chose ours. Oh and by the way i did my time in uniform and i #### sure didn't make no 1800 a month as an E5 in the air force when i was on flying status and away from my family for 9 to 10 moths at a time in these places we weren't supposed to be so i feel for you and your tour in Kuwait been there done that in the first gulf war and a few before that including SE Asia so i know where i come from.

I have a friend that was in your exact position about a month ago. Considering KBR after he got out and home. He too saw the potential for money. And offered to assist me with a job too.

After speaking with a few people, he decided to stay here. So did I.

He would have been in a supervisory position. But he would have been making no more money for his troubles, than if he had stayed stateside.

I think it's an individual choice that has to be made. But your expectations of money are a little unrealistic. Nobody pays enough to replace time. Time you'll never get back with your wife and kids.

Now in 16 months, the economy may be to the point you want to take the job. But, most "experts/idiots" say we should come full circle by summer of '09.

It's nice to see another EO. I'm a retired EO1.

First off you'll have a hard time running the same equipment stateside. When I got out (years go) I could have gone right to the "B" list and work at the Nevada Test Site. But that work was not year long. Of all my friends from NMCB4 just 1 of them is running equipment. As far as driving a truck you'll need to go to school. And then you'll make about half of what you make now. I wished that I would have done 10 more. You know the Bees are different and it's a good living. If I were you I'd stay. I not only say that because of what I did but because of the way things are now. You have a secure job. Now if your record is not exactly clean and your chances for E-7 are slim then maybe you should think about getting out.

You can make alot of money like you said but there's always a draw back. Some people think you'll be a war profiteer. And there's news about those companies that could care less about those who work for them. There is one bit of advice I'll give you and that's to have a job before you get out. If you have to extend then so be it. Check around the states with their highway dept. because they do work that's close to what we do.

After you post here 50 times then you can PM anyone. You can PM me and I'll help with all I can and if you're not in a position to get any material or paperwork I'll help there too. Can Do.

i was an eod contarctor (raytheon) from 1991-1994 and there was a lot of BS floating around about what we as "civillians" were making...

I was making what a capt. would have made - only with corporate structure bearing down on me... not the best deal going.

many many times guys read a $ sign and get mezmorized...

kinda like the crap on the back of truck doors...

"you can make UPPPPPP to 65K a year with us"

the question is.. what is your average joe making.

kbr is the same thing - guys are working their butts off for 100K - and in that they are tired - and making mistakes and taking chanes.

when I was in kuwait/iraq I was VERY picky about my coworkers - and would not roll with anyone who was pulling doubles for the cash.:biggrin_25512:

trucking/equipment - or my lone in EOD - either one you do not want to be around people not at the top of their game.

    Good Afternoon KD5DRX,

Good GOD what are you doing over there. Looks like we will have to give you the "Welcome Home Brother" all over again.

Just read your thread to this young man, and thought I would say thanks for being there.

I was DaNang 68-69, and Rose Garden 71-72. Got out before the Christmas bombing really started. Me and you may have definatley worked some of the same fields. You take care brother, and come home safe.

Be Safe and Have Fun !!!
    Nick

i used to be a alpha type about 3 years back and had a chance to join the operators union and its great. if you get out look into your local operator union. and most contractors know what seabees are and most most likely hire you because of that. what battalion you in?

Way back when, I was in the same boat as you.. Coming up on 8 years, trying to figure out whether I wanted to stay in or try my hand in the corporate world. After looking at all my options, I decided to stay in and go for the full ride.

Yeah, I could have made a buttload of cash if I had gotten out at that time. Do I regret it? Nope. Not at all. I retired 9 years ago, and to tell you the truth, I had a blast during those remaining 12 years.
