Just bought a reusable air filter for my Series 60, but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. just wanted to know if anybody had some opinion or first hand knowledge of the item?

you gotta spray it with cleaner, then gently rinse it out......AND WAIT TILL IT DRIES.....
then spray it with thier oil.....CAREFULLY or your engine will suck up that over-oiled residue and muck up any sensors in the intake plumbing....
best to have bought 2...that way, one is always ready to go to work, while you wait till the cows come home for it to dry, after washing...
'and THAT costs money...the filter, the wash spray, the oil....
best to just buy ordinary factory approved dry filters.
i'll personally NEVER buy another K&N filter, inspite of the claims of "% MORE HORSE POWER", as to me, that claim is 100% MORE HORSE CRAP".Last Call and GoneButNotForgotten Thank this. -
I bought the Fleet Air Filters with 3 layer foam wrap - had to Change out the 'Farr' air cleaners to 'Vortox' to do so. The Farr were an aluminum encapsulated filter and fairly expensive.
I like them - in my limited mechanical knowledge, engines require the least restriction possible to operate efficiently - you can hear the turbo a lot better, and I noticed a difference immediately.
How does the KN setup work? -
My dad got the family turned on to K&N’s back in the early 80’s when they only made motorcycle filters. As long as they made a filter for a car we owned we’d put one in. Never had an issue and they can go a long time before needing clean and service. A lot longer then paper filters. I’ve had great service, performance, and no loss of engines because of them.
that being said I know guys that with turbos have had to add a screen mesh to the filter box because after a awhile the intake pressure will try to pull the filters in and deform them away from the outer seal.
Big diesels need big filters that are strong enough to hold up to the wind coming through them. K&N’s have been on the flimsy side for cars. I’ve never seen or even thought of one for a big truck to comment on if it’s a good idea or not for them.blairandgretchen, God prefers Diesels and buddyd157 Thank this. -
i just in the end, never really saw any practical use for them, after the initial costs, cleaning, wait times for drying, oiling.
then too, he's gonna need extra bottles of cleaner AND the oil.....for cars, they were not cheap...for trucks..???
oh boy.
stick with paper. in an out, back on the road.blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
The big truck’s filters do not require oil, they are plug and play only. They do require cleaning but I’m sure that wouldn’t be a problem because I can clean it when I’m home and dry quick as well. The reason I ask is because I’m afraid of larger particles entering my engine and I just wanted to know what others experience has been. Project farm on YouTube didn’t give it the best review, but I already bought it so I just wanted to know what other drivers thought. Here’s a link if you want to check it out.
Replacement Air Filter-HDT -
When I buy a vehicle that comes with K&N filters, the filter goes in the trash.
This is just a fad that a lot of people jumped onto.
I’ve even done a performance air filter for my modified Stihl MS260 chainsaw.
The filter allowed fines through and the piston didn’t last.
I just rebuilt the saw with a new piston but it still uses the performance filter. I just do not use the saw as much as the others even though it is more fun.
I replace the K&N’s with regular paper filters.
The amount of air going through a turbo diesel is incredible.
I have seen engines that got “dusted” or turbos “sand blasted”. They ended up needing rebuilds after.
Filtration is far more important to me than trying to squeeze more hp out of an engine. Especially a truck I drive for work with potential $30,000 inframe costs.
A paper filter that is nearly clogged will decrease performance over time until a new one is put on.
When an oil filter loses its oily feel, the fine dust is going to go through until someone actually remembers to look.
Our 1992 Pete 359 with a 3406B Cat goes a couple years on the 2 large paper filters that hang outside. They’re enormous in which air will slowly pass through instead of a vacuum cleaner like our Ford Louisville with a 3406E Cat. The ford will put the filter minder on full in half a year. That truck is only a little filter compared to the Pete.Dadetrucking305, ProfessionalNoticer, austinmike and 3 others Thank this. -
