Terrible experience to say the least, and I will tell you why.
In order to get accepted into the school for the company I chose to work for(I will not name who, but you should be able to guess who by me not wanting to say), I was required to get a my DOT(which I got today) and get my CDL permit.
To my understanding, to get a CDL permit, its simple. Go to DMV, get free CDL handbook. Study the sections you wish to test and are required for you to get your CDL.
No biggie, so I literally researched for months just to be on the safe side, and came to accept that I would be tested over 3 sections. General Knowledge, Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes, and have to pass all 3 with atleast an 80 to be eligible to teach.
Study all 3 for weeks. Take dozens of practice test on each section until Im getting 94s and better. Read the sections again. Retake practice test.
You would think I would be ready to take the test right? Well not exactly.
So I go into the DMV, and apparently Texas just passed a new rule where you have to pass the special requirements test as well as the other 3, to receive your CDL permit.
Now this section was not even listed in the book to study at all. But no biggie, I can still atleast take the other 3 test right? I mean we are allowed to take each test at a time and come back on a different day to take the rest right? NOPE.
The "new rule" also changed that. You have to take the test in their order. And you have to pass one test to get to the next. Just so happened that the special requirements is the very first test they give you, so if you fail(which I did) not only will you have to come back and retake, but they won't even let you get a peek at the other 3 test to even see how you would do.
Heres some pics.
What I thought I would be tested over
What I was actually tested over
Just a warning to everyone else trying to get a CDL permit in Texas
Just took test to get my CDL permit(WARNING for anyone trying to do the same in TEXAS)

i had a difficult time, tracking down the Texas DMV and the CDL manual.
https://www.txdps.state.tx.us/internetforms/Forms/DL-7C.pdf
that is the last section, in the manual, section 14.
some, but not all in there, are in the other sections as well.
too late to say, but you had the manual, you should have at least cruised thru it.
no one should ever take any thing for granted when taking a test.
better luck next time.
PS, in my state, once we hit the pass grade, the computer shuts off, you never know here either, what questions you passed or failed.Xzay Thanks this. -
They test you on tic tac toe? Don't give up. I knew a person that failed the General Knowledge test five times.
-
When I took mine back in October we could take them in any order we wanted. But there again if you failed you had to wait 24 hours to retest. In Oregon which I found quite odd the combination test is free.

You better study school bus, farm equipment and metal wheels!!
I fell for the front page instructions as well....
All my questions were from the list above... After question six, I even got up to ask the Proctor if they loaded the wrong test??
Nope. You have to study the ENTIRE book. THEN WTF does it have the first section advising you???Xzay Thanks this. -
Ending up failing Air brakes by one question, surprisingly since that was the area I thought I knew the most in, and the area I thought I struggled the most(combination) i passed with a 100.
O well, be back Monday to take air brakes then pre trip in their dumb little order and pass them.David_Simpson Thanks this. -
Just read the whole "Special Requirements for Texas Commercial Motor Vehicles" Nothing specific to TX about any of that. Just stuff thats said in the other parts of the book revisited and a lot of other normal stuff.
David_Simpson Thanks this. -
I was never one to memorize the pre trip in order. I had to go by the order of where it was at on the truck.
