How much juice would a generator need to start a rig with dead batteries? Also, does anyone know of any portable starting devices that would be powerful enough to jump a truck, something you could carry with you in the sidebox perhaps? It would be nice to have something I could carry on the truck during the winter just in case, especially since roadside costs an arm and a leg. I know I see portable starters in some truck stops and auto parts stores, but a lot of them look like a waste of money.

If you are talking a recent truck it would have an alternator, not a generator. Recent trucks require approximately 13 volts for the ECM and electronic fuel injectors.

There are booster packs out there rated for commercial vehicles. Rescue brand booster packs can be had rated for 800 amp starting current and 1500 amp peak current. That may do the trick, but you will have one shot at it, perhaps two. The trouble with battery packs and booster packs is the reduced battery capacity. A commercial vehicle will drain a booster pack in a heart beat. Carrying two fresh batteries is as viable as trying to get a booster pack with enough power to reliably start a class 8 vehicle in cold weather. Cheaper and only slightly more bulky as well.

easiet way as said above is four new ones i replaced all four of mine last year cost was like 400-500 bucks .

But trick I learned in carhauling if you want backup buy 2 of the 12 volt battery jumper packs with the switch to jump to 24 volt.
One charge they will last for months I run into cars that i had to jump to get on and jump to get off used on my truck the one time when the batteries died.

Then jump from the starter much easier then messing with the batteries and all that bs

wow why is dude banned in 6 hours lol

I don't think it will put out enough juice. The Honda has those little ports you can buy the accessory that is used to plug into those and hook up to the batteries but like I said I don't think will put out enough power for a big rig, a little car maybe.

About the only option you have with that generator is to buy a smaller 12 volt battery charger and let the truck sit on charge for a couple hours. Generator might be able to handle a 45 amp charge rate at best but I don't think it'd support a start boost.
