I haven't signed on with these folks yet but they have the big advantage of being about 600 yards from my home. $3300 if you pay up front for 160 hours of instruction, all of which is truck time if you have already passed the written tests when you start. They have three Volvo tractors, a couple of box trailers and a flatbed. NOT a big outfit, obviously, but the people seem nice. Does anyone know anything about them? What should I be asking them?

Ask which companies recruit from their school.
If you like any of the companies, call them, tell them you plan to attend that particular school & see what the response is.

Many companies hire from 160 hr schools & some want more.

Some companies even will reimburse you for the tuition. Several do that such as Watkins & Shepard.

Work on your endorsements also while in the school which will give you more job opportunities. Don't worry, you complete that school, you will find a good job. You can also apply at any company. Some companies may not have active recruiters at the school, but will still hire you if you apply.

Hi Robbak. I'm actually glad that you mention them. I was approved to start there in December 2012. (Going through the dept of rehab). But, due to a scheduling conflict, I'm actually gonna start in a month or so. But, I've been up there and spoken with Jose and he seems like a good guy. I mean, he was even telling when the drug tests were etc., I guess because if I were to fail, he wouldnt get paid. This is where the state agencies sponsor people to go, so you know they are going to be credible. I think this is pretty much the best school around. I've looked for others and this seems to be THE school in the north bay area.

I have got to get a decent handle!

Thanks, Chinatown. I hadn't thought to ask them who hires their grads. They did mention Swift - is that a good sign?

Truckingbizness: I plan to be there in August so maybe we'll train together. Thanks - I haven't been able to learn much about them one way or another but my impression was very good.

Jose told me that there's a bunch of recruiters there that are basically gonna be fighting over you by the time you graduate. You're basically guaranteed a job

Apply with trans-system. They have terminals in CA and hire new drivers. trans-system is an umbrella company for 3 trucking companies. This is not a starter company like Swift. Nothing against Swift, but you can do better as far as annual pay. Two more good companies to apply with are Melton Truck Lines and Schneider tanker division. National Carriers hires new CDL grads, even though their website says 6 mos. experience required. It's a refrigerated company. Your best pay annually will be with tanker or flatbed. TWT Refrigerated Services has a reputation for good paychecks though.

So there are 6 companies you can look at websites & apply if you like.Don't limit the number of applications; apply with all companies that interest you, then sift through the approvals and choose a company.
