Hi guys I am completely new to the Forum. I am about to start a trucking school here in VA. I am single and have no kids, so I my goal is to get in on the boom in ND. I have read a lot about it, but I would like to hear from someone who has first hand experience. Do they hire new drivers up there? What kind of hours can you get? Hows life in the "man camps" ? Is December a good or bad month to move out there employment-wise? Should I try to find a job from here or move up there and then look for work? Any comments, advice will be appreciated and thanks in advance.

I had a load from Houston Tx to Williston North Dakota of Drilling Pipes and that place sure is Booming. Stayed in the only run down Truck Stop in town. At the time i was there, they were building a Love's Truck Stop and TA. Stayed there for three days, no load out of there, talk to alot of people. Ill be honest with you, if you are Black, some companies will come up with all kinds of excuses not to hire you like a man from Miami looking for work. Another is that the rates are starting to fall down. A owner operator was making $135 an hour and now is down $95.00 an hour 14 hours a day, six days a week, no logs since its in farm territory. Swift just showed up and you know where are the rates. Lots of company driver jobs. Locals say its kind of slow right now because of the Election. Hoping Romney wins, but if Obama wins, Forget about going up there!

The only thing that is going to stop energy extraction in north Dakota at this point is a massive supply of cheap easy to get at oil and gas. Of course such a thing doeant exist as far as we know.
Trust me even if a future administration cuts all oil subsidies and our prices go up, ND will still be extracting energy. I say now is the time to get a Job.and put in some time with a company so that when things become developed you will be in a better place than the new people. -
That's been my thinking and understanding of the situation. The domestic production of going after gas and oil is here to stay. -

Here's a curiosity update for you all a thinkin bout the future and stability re. drilling jobs(ND) and everything that services this industry:: Was just on a flight coming back from Denver yesterday afternoon, turns out person on the window seat side works as a drilling consultant for one of the big boys up in the Bakken(Whiting Oil). He tells me lotsa things, one he has more than 15yrs working oil,two he has worked his way up,starting as a laborer, now lead overseer,at mostly he tells me Nabors drilling platform operations. Three, says last 2yrs the whole sequence of drilling operations from start to finish is getting much faster and much more tech advanced. For this reason,he said, alot of people have heard bout that slowdown from about June till this Sept. The oil leases were drilled, fracked and tanked faster than what newer ones coming on line. He verified the speculation and rumor traveling round the area bout drilling rigs being on standby, just sitting. Something else also, Whiting and others were way over spent, completed twice as many projects in like 1/2 the time, mentioned politics had little to none really holding back or moving forward anything.
Looks like a whole new round of drilling is restarting as of this date.
We also talked about a new ND refinery just approved, 1st of its kind since the 70's. It'll be constructed just outside Newtown ND, Early spring 2013 likely start date. They expect to use mostly North Dakota oil resources. I'm sure this is old news for some, but for once the info is much more 1st hand and kinda corroborates some of the rumors -
