Looking for help, the eighteen trucking jobs from 1979 to 2003 all came by word of mouth for me. In 2004 took a good job as a dispatcher for a limo company contracted to a four star hotel. The money was good, every now and then we would be short a driver, so I would drive someone to the airport and receive a tip on top of the tips the shuttle drivers would leave on my desk at the end of the night for keeping them moving. Then Dec 2009 the four star hotel occupancy drops to less than nine percent, we could not keep up, the owners of the limo company closed the doors and went out of business. Another limo company takes over the hotel contract with an offer to re- employ many of us. It lasted about two weeks, then they asked me to become a chauffeur at half my pay scale, I declined, unemployment paid more. All of 2010 my girl friend, family and myself took turns caring for my mothers health that was declining from dementia. We lost her in January of 2011, she was a good mother to all, God Bless ! Now comes February 2011, I call CRST VAN EXP, this turns out to be a bigger mistake than not getting my diploma or my GED thirty-three years ago, long story short, ran over 45 pound a-frame barricade that put a hole in the oil pan, my fault but did not feel bad about it, ended that job. Last week I get a call from a local trucking company that tells me we can put you to work right away But ?? I think its my point in a half for having to much fun with CRST'S truck. The man on the phone tells me no its your education, the owners have a think about that, but the points on your DMV can be worked with, he tells me get your GED and pass it and we will put you work. I under stand that and respect it, but at age 51 I need A JOB and will be willing to work on obtaining My GED at the same time. Any drivers that may have had to manged this unfortunate type of situation would be helpful. THANK YOU !!!

Given the fact that the op managed to write a long post with only one or two typos, where you already made two spelling errors in your first sentence, I think he deserves a bit more respect.

@ FEELTTHEWHEEL: Sir. As I am European, I do not know much about the US educational system. But would it not be possible for you to take the GED exam straight up, without going to school? I'd say you stand a good change of passing right away. This would at least save you a lot of time.
Anyway I wish you good luck on your endeavour.

it would seem to me that your resume now would trump your education
accidents will trump resume and education

What a shame that age and experience gets trumped by a High School diploma....

Maybe look into an online GED program.

I found this online that is A rated by the BBB...

Not trying to be judgmental in any way...But your work history with the trucking industry is not stellar..by you own admission 18 jobs in 24 years...that means either you don't play well with others or can't follow rules. IMO... that is your biggest roadblock not your education.....

About the only thing you can do is to keep knocking on doors or work on getting your GED. You might just take a shot and take the test without taking time to study. If you pass, you get the diploma. If you don't, then you can start studying to take it again.

How old will you be if you DON'T get your GED? The answer is simple, go get it and get to work.

18 trucking jobs would appear to be the normal nowadays as people switch trucks and just find a different set of the same problems
