Having electrical issues with my jake brakes.

Anybody have a wiring diagram for the jake brakes on a CAT 3406B mechanical?

I believe I have the model 346 "Super Jake" not sure if it matters.

    Thanks

It's been rewired several times in the past by various mechanics and owners. I was trying to clean up the wiring in the dash(open wires shorting to the panel in various other circuits) and I unplugged something, somewhere. The truck also has been converted from a PEEC engine to a mechanical CAT so the OE diagrams that involve the ECM aren't helping much.

    It's a 1994 KW W900

@wore out would be the one to figure this out. He's old school on those engines.

Here is a very crude drawing of the wiring for the jake. Bottom half shoes the wiring for the jake switch and the disconnected wire. I did take and connect the mystery wire to the bottom tab on the clutch switch and that brought the jake back to life BUT if I leave the switch on the jake will still fire at idle but not under load. What keeps the jake off at idle?

    What do you guys think?

They are fairly simple once you know the basics, but chasing out past work can be a bit of a nightmare depending on how it was done.
    The basics are as follows:
You have three places that interupt the circuit:
    1. Clutch switch - so that when the clutch is depressed the jakes will not come on
    2. Throttle switch - so that when any pressure is put on the throttle the jakes are disengaged
    3. Dash switch - which will have a mode for 1 stage (3 cylinders), or 2 stage (6 cylinders)
The throttle switch sits on the rear of the injection pump close to the block, it will have two prongs coming off of it, and a jam nut holding it in place. This switch also regulates your low idle speed. If you loosen the jam nut and turn it in or out you can adjust your low idle speed.

I am not sure on if the clutch switch will be inside or outside of your truck, but I suspect it is on the inside. You should see a stiff wire that contacts the clutch pedal, or a little button switch that the clutch pedal linkage barely touches when the clutch pedal is not depressed at all.

Your should see a wire loom that travels along the right side of the engine, below the valve covers. This will have a spade connector going to each jake body.

So this means that there are four areas that you can test with a test light to see if you have power:
    1. Spade connectors at jakes
    2. Dash switches (power to on/off switch, and power from on/off switch to stage switch)
    3. Throttle switch
    4. Clutch switch
Kenworth uses/used a lot of ground switches in the dash, but I don't believe the jake switch was one of them.

If you do not have power at any of these places then the fuse panel will be the place to start.

I do not know the order that these separate components are in line (whether or not the power goes from the source to the throttle, clutch, dash, are any variation of these), but at least this may help you to determine where the problem is.

Sorry, I was typing while you posted. The throttle switch is what disconnects power at an idle, and it is located at the back of the injection pump, up against the block. It will have two prongs and two wires going to it. If you have any doubt, I can go out and take a picture for you.
