Context is that I'm moving from Canada to Washington and was looking for someone who can transport my mattress and only my mattress, and deliver on more or less the same day. I am reading around and see a lot of things about how the drivers on uShip do not always have insurance or have DOT (not really quite sure what this means), and I also see lots of truckers stating that you can't really make money off of uShip anyways unless you cut corners. I'm also unsure if additional documentation are needed, since it is a trip across the border.
The listing suggested listing prices do seem a bit low on UShip, but if someone was driving a truckload of stuff on the way, and had room, it seems like it would make sense.
Details:
I am shipping a two piece mattress. The suggested listing range is 156 (CAD) for average paid, and 217 (CAD) for highest paid. The distance is about 450 km total, or 220 miles.
Bed
12.5 inch height
58 inch width
79 inch length
Box spring
9 inch height
58 inch width
79 inch length
If anyone has advice, I'd love to hear what you have to say.
I also posted this on the "everything" thread, so I apologize for any cross posts.
Is uShip reliable? (as someone who needs things delivered, not as driver)

Honestly, your best bet is simply toss it and buy a new one. It will likely end up being cheaper than shipping it.
If, however, it is not, and you do use uship ask a few questions.
1. What is your DOT number.
2. Who is cargo insurance through, and the policy number.
If they respond (99% will not) you can call and verify they do in fact have insurance.
You can take the DOT number and plop it in this site SAFER Web - Company Snapshot to get a general overview of the company safety record.
Basically what those two questions do is weed out the fly by night operators and want to make a few dollars by not following any laws.
You can also try an LTL (Less than Truck Load) company. Old Dominion, Estes, R+L Carriers to name a few.gentleroger Thanks this. -
I've used Uship many times with good results but for once.

Easy solution is to get a uhaul pickup truck

Broker fees for cross border??? Possibly selected for further inspection due to suspected smuggling after all who ships a used mattress ..TBH honest unless theirs sentimental value to it why bother

I have used uShip a lot, with great success. The reason they can keep their prices low is because they usually will add on your item as LTL? These guys will know what that means, I don't! I just know that they already are going somewhere and coming back, and they can pick up my thing and deliver it cheaper because somebody else is already basically paying for the load, does that make sense? it doesn't cost you anything to put an ad out there, and see who responds, and what kind of bids you get. You may be pleasantly surprised!

I wouldn't do it cuz now that little load is going to raise questions at border. Extra paperwork if they demand customs paperwork for it. Now jeopardizing the full load (the money load). I make my living on what I'm already doing. So why would I jeopardize that to make a couple hundred to move your bed? No thanks. That's if you're even at the delivery to accept it not causing me more time delays.
Just buy a new bed. How is your bed the only thing you own you need a decent size truck to move? Too much fishyness here.magoo68 Thanks this. -

I find it interesting that you posted this question about uShip here, because for the past month I have been advertising on there, trying to find an owner operator driver with a rig, and have gotten absolutely no response. So I don't think these kinds of drivers are the same kind uShip usually brokers. As a matter of fact, I think somebody told me to go to Uber to find what I needed. Hey, but what do I know. I'm delusional LOL
