I am planning to buy a used 2013 Freightliner Cascadia. I was told that after 2007, Freightliner experimented too much by adding new computerized modules which are still hard to handle by most mechanics. And you have to bring your truck to dealership all the time for expensive maintenance. Freightliner tucks only became more stable / low cost maintenance in the last few years. Do you think if 2013 Cascadia is stable enough low maintenance truck or I have to consider look for 2014 or even 2015 ?
Is this worth to buy 2013 Freight liner Cascadia Detroit DD15 ?

I would go in to the freightliner service department and talk to the mechanics about what they think. I know I was in there a couple of months ago. We talked about the new trucks & service manager told me on the owner operator side it is very expensive just to find the problem sometimes. I'll keep my faithful 97 & 99 trucks.

I don't have a Cascadia, I have a 2013 Western Star with the DD15. As far as the engine goes, I've been very happy with it. Only had to fix a couple of oil leaks under warranty.
If you get it and hear it squealing from the front pulleys and belts, it's probably just the idler pulley assembly. They made lots of them out of alignment, mine was replaced also under warranty. Good now.
We had a company truck that was a 2009 Cascadia with a DD15, it did have a few issues early on but became reliable. They only traded it off early 2015 for a new Cascadia with a DD16.T2T Thanks this. -
Pull the Vin and ask Freightliner to run a history on it, see how many times it's been in, and what for.
Rig Dig is also useful for history.
Dyno test.
The company one we drove a few years back had serious issues at 440,000 miles. Injectors and harnesses.T2T Thanks this. -
From what I've seen things can get very expensive very fast. I'd make sure you're still under warranty, especially injector coverage and aftertreatment coverage. -
Depending on who originally purchased the truck, a lot of the truck could go to 600K for warranty. Think the tranny go to 750K. Same for rear ends.
All that in mind, they split hairs on warranty issues, and you can spend a lot of time at dealers getting work done. -
If ur not runing California stay with 03 down

I have a 2010 Cascadia.. The 2013 has the DPF fluid system, mine is just a particulator filter and a diesel injector.. My system has been a pain in the ### every year the dozer injector valve has to be replaced... I had a 2013 company truck and I had zero issues with it, that being said I only put like 100 thousand on that truck.. My 2010 has 830k on it I lost the main wire harness back last year corrosion played its part on that.. I had the oil pump replaced at 730k.. Egr was replaced under warranty at 600k.. I got the truck with 445k.. So all in all the truck had been a really good truck.. If I could delete the regen #### I would, but that's really my only grip about the truck, Its a money maker and with every truck there is no guaranties... Every truck will have its problems it's the nature of the business... Like the one drive said have Freightliner pull up the work history on that truck, if it's been in the shop more than it has been driven.. Definitely leave it there and keep looking..

The DD15 is a good powerful engine, best mpg being the most efficient. It's def made for EGR and after treatment where as the S60 EPA07 just simply sucks and has a lot of issues. I work for a authorized Detroit dealer and repair plenty of DD13/DD15/DD16 engines and recommend purchasing extended warranty on the engine side and after treatment side. I would look at service records before purchasing. A lot of the modules and seals leak on this engine and Detroit has updated versions. We have replaced liner seals at 250,000 miles and even 450,000 miles and I do a lot of cam frame leaks, head gasket leaks, and module leaks including the high psi fuel pump and rear housing, failed EGR coolers, failed high psi fuel pumps, etc, etc. All and all it's a simple engine for me to work on, but to the naked eye or a mechanic it may be tough and it's a very sensitive engine. For example, the injectors may air lock and fail upon start up if you don't prime the fuel system properly and if it's not under warranty you will have to buy 6 new injectors. I personally think the after treatment system on the Detroit DD engine is less complicated and more simple to diagnose, but we also do replace the 1-BOX (DOC,DPF,SCR BOX) frequently when it doesn't covert NOx for example which is why I recommend having extended warranty.
