I was thinking about getting into hauling gas maybe within the next year. I know the smartest thing would be to start off as a company driver first and stay that way for a while to learn all the ins and outs. I guess my question is for any of you guys that ever worked for a tanker company delivering local/ home every day, and had your own tractor, what's better? Is the money a big difference if you got your own or is it pretty close to company drivers pay after all the expences and bs?

    thanks!

If you havent done gas before, Id say be a company driver first. Theres alot to learn. Plus its not for everyone, better to find that out as a company driver than as an o/o.

Hauling gas is pretty easy if you have someone to go with you for about three days you will pick it up with no problem it is not rocket science, all you need to do is learn where the racks are and how and what to load...if you don't have a wet kit on your truck dropping at gas stations is a piece of cake (you don't have to worry about "pump offs"). I have not done this as an o/o but I would expect you should be able to do $300 to $500 a day no problem...if you have a large car you may have some problems with weight but if you only do city loads this should not be a problem...but you want something that you can get in and out of stations without much of a problem.

Its definitely an easy job. My point was that alot of guys wash out quick because they find out that its not for them - cant get past the "dangerous" aspect of it,they arent computer literate or lack basic math skills, etc. Theres plenty of O/O's doing it,good $$ to be made. Are you Jumping in as a brand new O/O and new to gas ? Smaller truck the better , just makes it easier. Rates are all over the place, just like everywhere else, someone always wants to haul it for nothing for some reason. Again, it depends on who you lease to.

yea i would be a newb to gas, and i definitely don't plan on starting as an O/O, i know i'd screw myself real quick with no experience. My plan is to do it as a company driver for at least a few years until I get comfortable with it and learn the business and then get my own day cab. i drive for pepsi so im pretty used to getting in and out of gas stations lol. just wanted to know if the money is good if you got your own truck and how good

I`m thinking about getting into gas hauling myself. Does companies like Love`s or Pilot hire students? And would these companies be good to work for?
I see alot of Kennan & Spirit Express trucks in my area.

I'm an owner operator and would like to get into fuel hauling. Any suggestions of who I need to search out for using my own authority for contracting. I have an experienced gas driver to start. Thanks, mike. We could be int Tulsa, Stillwater, Oklahoma City areas.

    Rider,

If you want to haul gas, using your authority, you need to get out and knock on some doors. Go to the local jobbers/distributors in your area. Even if they have their own trucks, many still have overflow loads and use outside carriers. I have a friend (owner/op.) that hauls for 3 diffrent distributors(Shell,Exxon, etc.) and he does very well. He does a lot of weekend work though. Fri. -Sat. are the biggest days for gas sales....

Im sure you have looked into this. You will need a minimum of 5 million in Liability Ins. to haul fuel. And those tanks arent cheap, 100k for a new one. 30 - 40k for a wore out one. They are expensive to maintain also. Lots of wiring, air valves, safety, overfill sensors etc.

You can also lease your truck to someone like Kenan and pull their trailer.
