I had a cdl years ago and never used it because my driving record was bad at the time. Now I am wondering if it's a good idea to get into the field. Or is it bad and it's best to go into the computer field, etc. nowadays? I almost feel scared to drive such a big vehicle again lol. Being in the right gear at the right time etc. Which is why I would prefer automatic.

So, drivers, do you recommend getting into the field or not? If not, what other field with a short training time would you recommend?

Is it possible to make $80K your first year with 4 weeks of training? Pretty much. The problem is there are too many trucking companies who don't understand the industry or how to care for and adequately compensate drivers. The trick is finding a decent employer who doesn't trick f... you every time you turn around.

There was the outfit that hired me for a driving job. After I finished their paid orientation they told me a more experienced driver had applied for my job so they were giving it to him but they had a crappier driving job they would let me have if I wanted to stick around.

There was the outfit that issued me a fuel card that was declined. They issued me a second fuel card, also declined. They routed me up the Olympic Penninsula without enough fuel to return. I told them a day before I ran out of diesel that I didn't have enough fuel to return. They routed me to a fueling location that had already closed for the day then went home for the weekend. 2 am on a Saturday at the Pilot in Olympia I paid for my own diesel and def to get home so I wouldn't have to spend the weekend in a day cab 100 miles from home. Turned in my receipt on Monday. 30 days later they still didn't reimburse me!

I've got more stories, but you just need to find a decent company ONCE.

It always has been an individual decision based on what that individual values more and the job/company that individual pays & requires. Even today there are many driving jobs nobody takes except rookies. There are many much better jobs half of the experienced drivers would not take.

You need to compare THE driving job YOU get with the current job you have and evaluate the money & time away from home or hours YOU work.

Yep, trucking is worth it...unless you can make the same or more money in computers.

What's the average starting pay in the computer field you are thinking of and how much and how long is the training needed to get that first job?.

This company might hire you and give you excellent training.
I know of one guy that hadn't driven since cdl school 10 years ago and a terminal hired him.
The terminal worked with him and 2 or 3 weeks later he was ready to go.
You'll be home every day also.

I think both; the older trucks are stick shift.
There's several companies that have what you want on your other thread:

Not possible. The last time Chocolate Jesus and Mad King Joe took a wrecking ball to the economy they came up with H1-b visas to help with the, "shortage of skilled IT professionals". (sound familiar?). They brought 800,000 people into the country to do IT jobs for $20k/yr and a chance at a green card. There was no shortage, just a lot of companies who wanted to pay less. They replaced their IT professionals making $80k-$120k/yr with imports from China, Pakistan, India, Vietnam and other places. I went to interviews (not for a job, just projects lasting 6-10 months) that required a Master's degree and 10+ years of experience that had 50 applicants. People flew in from around the country for in-person interviews for a project they didn't have a chance in hell of landing. Five years prior there might have been 3 applicants for the position.
