Is it safe to flip the gear selector switch while in neutral?

I am driving a 10 speed. Say for example I am going 30 mph and that there is a red light coming up. Instead of dow shifting I just throw it in neutral and use the breaks to stop. Now when I am ready to go again I need to get to 2nd gear but to do so I have to switch to the low range gears.

I have heard that doing that in neutral is bad for the transmision, but would it still do any damage if you do it while the truck is not moving?

No it wont do any damage if the truck is not moving. I throw it in neutral at every time I stop or I'm stuck in traffic when I'm slow down enough. No sense wearing out your leg. I can see how it's bad for the brakes but I don't know how it is for the transmission. It doesn't make any bad noises and nothing bad has happened to my truck yet and I do it all the time just coasting and using the brake and or Jake.

if you know how the trans works you would know that your technically going into neutral everytime you have to switch between low and high. If your using a 10 speed to go from fifth to sixth you flip up on the switch then go over to where first is but if you notice your trans doesn't switch to high gear until you move the shifter into neutral position on your way over to sixth. so to answer your question no it wont hurt it because that's exactly how it flips from high to low in normal conditions

Your question may have derived from the old 5 speed with a "dog" or 2 speed rear end. I know back in the 70's & 80s, I drove a truck.. actually, several trucks... with a 2 speed rear end. If you were going to fast (a speed above the gear ratio of the differential gears) & you tried to go from hi to lo, even while in neutral, the gears in the rear end would growl. But that has nothing to do with the tranny... all that is in the differential.

I'm just saying that that may be who/where/when your question derived.

As for switching the hi/lo splitter on the tranny... I am with the others.... I occasionally do it & I dont have a problem with it anywhere.

    Hope this helps :)

Towing with the drive shaft connected is bad, and grinding gears is the only way I know it's possible to mess up a manual transmission.

No, I'm pretty sure the Eaton manual says to make sure you Pre-select your range. Not sure why because as everyone has said....it doesn't seem to mind.

With my old LTL9000, you had to switch it while it was in neutral... you kept getting a grinding noise if you tried pre-selection. Noticed that in quite a few Fords, actually... and with an International S2500, if I remember correctly.
But we're talking about trucks a bit long in the tooth, not the most recent models.

Better not to throw it in neutral until you're slower. If you're doing 30 let it coast down in gear and brake (if it's still necessary) until you're approaching lugging the engine.

Nope. Ever forget to select low range? You can flip the level until you get a blister, it ain't going into low range until you put it in neutral.

Same way up or down shifting; you pre-select, but it doesn't change range until the tranny goes into neutral.
