Hi I am a new driver looking to do dedicated routes or regional between Toronto and Miami. I was looking at buying a used sleeper truck from penske. They look good and priced right. But I'm not sure if it's a smart idea or will I be living in a Mechanic shop. Would right appreciate anyone's insider opinion. Thank you.

No matter where you buy a truck, you should have a good mechanic that you trust do a FULL inspection, dyno, and oil samples.

Penske will have all the records for the truck, but you will still want to do a rig dig report. Then once you put your refundable deposit down on it, you take it to a certified mechanic and shop and gladly pay them to go over the truck...stem to stern!

Actually, any rental truck should have a good maintenance record. My concern is just how many drivers have been "gear jammin'" this truck. On the other hand some rentals are leased to a company and possibly just one driver has driven it for a two yr period.

From personal experience Penske trucks are nothing but issues usually i tell my customer to look for an old Owner Op truck those are usually best buys i have three penske truck and the first 1.5 years was nothing but one headache after another after i replace everything now they are good but would not suggest anyone to actually go and purchase a truck there, in the end of it all i will tell you that when you purchase a truck it's simply just luck of the draw just depends if you have good luck or not.

I've bought used penske LEASE trucks and it's worked out, their maintenance program is decent. The rental fleet is a bit more raggedy however. But there's a wide variety so I think it's a place you could buy a good or bad truck from, it's more about the specific truck.

The doors on the sleeper cabinets are ALWAYS busted however so you can just plan on that or haggle with them to get them replaced.

I have penske truck, 05 columbia, bought it with around 600k now has right under 1300000. Nothing done to the engine so far. Good solid truck. No matter where you buy it, even from OO, You have to have someone look over the truck if you are not able to. Just because its penske, ryder you name it its not all garbage, take your time and dont let sales people push you around, plenty of good trucks. Look over everything.
