You're exactly right. I've also found Flex Seal, or something to the equivalent of, to be useful as well

Its not a DOT VIOLATION unless youre Bobtailing.,because normally you have the trailer over it.

Then tell them to only give you a 45% violation.

Mind quoting a law on that? I’d like to read it. As far as i know you don’t need them at all. Infact a Co i used to work for we flipped them upside down, kept the stone hits on the back wall down. (We ran Tankers,Dumps, etc... So there was a pretty good gap from top of the tires to the bottom of the trailer fenders

I got to wondering about laws,so,I looked up ATA updated list of splash guard and mudflap laws by state. It does seem to somewhat vary, but most say ok to be missing on combination vehicle with a trailer.

Just for the record something does not have to be a DOT violation to get you in trouble. You can file this comment into the section of the hundreds if not thousands of comments about keeping clean dashes and trucks. Anything you do that draws a DOT officers scrutiny lets that officer get his foot into the door. This is why a lot of carriers will try to fix fairings etc etc. Drive a truck long enough and I promise you this will become very evident.

100% correct. This is why i’d prefer to take it off until i get a replacement.

I remember in the last year or so someone posted on this forum that they got a dot inspection because the officer noticed their unit number was mailbox numbers. That might have been in the LS thread seeing as that is what they offer you in orientation. This sitcks in my head because it is such a goofball reason to inspect someone.
