According to what I am reading a nine-speed is just a 13-speed without a splitter. Does that mean 9th gear is going to be an overdrive? I just keep seeing these peterbilts with nine speeds in them and I'm concerned that they would be geared too low.
Is a 9 speed a good otr truck?

There are pages of different configuration 9 speeds. Some are 1.0 on 9th, but most are overdrive. Some are convertible easily to a 13sp.

They do alright if you have enough engine.Rideandrepair and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
The jump from 8th to 9th usually sucks...... but it’ll get the job done.
The overall gearing to worry about is in the rear ends......Roger McG, Rideandrepair and Bean Jr. Thank this. -
Gotta be a 13.

I had a 9 spdOD in a 1992 WS. Hooked to a 425 Cat and 390 rears. I liked it. 8th direct gear had long legs, That made it fun to drive. Did everything a 10 spd would do.

9 speed?
Good transmission, in a mega carrier truck. -
It worked out, I drove them to start with, and the jump from a 9 to 13 or 18 is easier.
Been in 10 speeds mostly since forever, it seems. And I don't like automated.tommymonza Thanks this. -
I'm used to driving 18s and I struggle to drive a 10 because I always seem to forget 6th gear. hell I'll even take the Maxi torque 18 over this automated junk I'm driving now.D.Tibbitt and feldsforever Thank this.
