Hi y’all! Hope you guys have a great time! I’m about to get back to interstate business as an owner operator and facing kind of complicated situation: I do have NC CDL, my USDOT number is in NC, insurance is filed in NC. But I recently moved to CA ( yeah, unfortunately). I purchased the truck and easiest option would be to get registered the truck in CA ( I have open IRP account ) as well as get IFTA here in CA. But also I have an option to get registered in NC ( a little more complicated and renewal on the next year possible could make a headache). What is the best way to do it? Does DOT cares about what state truck is registered/USDOT number located? How’s insurance company cares?
Thanks in advance and God bless.

Did you check to see if the truck is registered capable first?

I don't live in Cali and could be wrong but last I heard was Cali was banning older trucks from being registered. And it didn't matter what state it's registered in. It had to be Cali approved.

That was a few years ago though so I have no idea where it's at in the cali lawbook. Or if it even made it to lawbook.

Yeah, truck is capable to get registered in CA. It’s not an old truck. My question is about how’s would be looks for law enforcement and insurance companies if my IRP/IFTA in one state but USDOT, insurance, CDL from another.

Your insurance will care. They base your premium on the domiciled location of your truck and business. California likely has much higher rate, so they will want the difference. Also, CA will want a CA approved base policy since they will be the base state.

Next, your CDL has to be issued from the state you live in, you have 30 days to transfer, so when you get your US DOT new entrant audit and haven't switches your CDL to your state of residency you will face still penalties for using an unqualified driver.

At the side of the road the inspector will nit care about the difference but the auditor will and the state likely will when you try to register the truck.

Until they secede from the rest of the country and become their own kingdom by blocking off entry to all outsiders at the border, my 09 will continue to roll on American Interstates and roads.

I’ve seen a lot of old trucks on the roads in Commifornia. Seems like nobody cares. This state is overregulated and underenforced.

I see YOU Outlaws here in Commiefornia all day long. And may I add, I even see Commiefornia registered trucks that not in compliance too, Do I care, Yes, am I doing something about it,;)No, I mined my own business. The people I do business with here in Commiefornia, request a Compliant truck, so I don’t have a choice. In closing, to you all that that are non compliant in Commiefornia, “More Power To You”……. and Im out. :D:p:rolleyes:;)
